I wouldn't expect it this year. Maybe in 2010. Hell I could be wrong, but it doesn't look good for this year.

I think it took five years to reach DVD, so I wouldn't expect it too soon.

I too would definitely pick this up.

2012 will be its 30th (holy crap!) anniversary. It might be held off until then to commemorate the occasion.

Will probably have to wait awhile... but we did get Close Encounters of the Third Kind... so who knows.

Oh my gosh..you had to say that. I remember my mom taking me to see this and I did not want to go see a movie about some stupid little alien and some kid.

I think I changed my tune when I got out of the theater.

30 yrs huh?

Steven Spielberg is famously reluctant to let his Universal movies out on any new format. I think he wants the bugs of the format to be ironed out and for it to have put a reasonably sized dent in the consumer base. There's no point releasing ET amid a whirlwind of publicity if there's nobody out there to buy it. I'm not I agree with this philosophy but there you go. It was ages until any of them appeared on DVD.

Don't hold your breath for ET or Jaws or Jurassic Park or Schindler's List or the rest.

We'll probably get The Indiana Jones trilogy soon (Paramount/Lucasfilm), and Close Encounters is obviously out already (Columbia). The Universal ones... hmmmm....

I would love to have it, as long as it contains both versions of the film (like on the DVD).

Well said. I agree. E.T. will make it to Blu someday. Too much money to be made for Universal to not release it on Blu.

I'm trying to remember if it was said that the 2-version release back in 2002 was the last time the original would be put out, or if it was just the last and only time it'd be available on DVD... I'm hoping the latter.

Those words are just for Marketing purposes. If there's money to be made, you can bet the house they'll re-issue it at some point.
