in order to get hd audio codecs the receiver must be able to accept audio through HDMI also commonly known as PCM

If you can only get audio through an optical cable you will not be able to listen to the dolby tru hd and DTS HD tracks that blu rays have because optical cables do not have the required bandwidth to pass these lossl less tracks.

as for the video not working, did you cnahge the output in the blu ray player to HDMI out?
