Im pretty sure Paramount still has the full video rights to 1-8, and that has been the case for almost all the time they sold the Jason character to New Line. (except for a year or two in which they licensed out several of their titles to Warner Bros.)

Individual Steelbooks, new 8-film collection set, 8-film Steelbook; it's all a bunch of redundant crap. Just keep the previous ~$20 8-film set in print as a cheap alternative to the SF. No reason to issue anything new until the SF has run its course.
Agreed, it does seem odd for Paramount to be doing this while the Shout set is still in print. I think everybody was surprised when that Paramount amaray set was announced a month ago. But it's a great thing for me because I love steelbooks, I hate the New Line films, and I dislike the Shout artwork.

Only thing more horrid than Jason is the artwork on this steelbook.
It's starting to grow on me, although I still think it is very imperfect and I wish they had not used Roy on the back. But I think a lot of people would agree that is at least a more improved version of part 8 Jason on the cover. Jason doesnt look slimy and his mask isnt yellow. Still hate the inside art though.
