Forgive us Americans. We still live in the dark ages and use the British Imperial system instead of the metric system.

1 meter = 3.28 ft = 39.37 inches
1 ft = 0.305 meter = 30.48 cm = 12 inches
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 cm = 0.3937 inches

For front speakers, put the speakers at least 2 to 3 feet away from the rear wall. The tweeters of the front speakers should be approximately on the same level as your ears when you are sitting down.

The surround speakers should be slightly above your head. If you use bipolar surround speakers, install them slightly behind you on the side walls and above your head. If you use dipole surround speakers, install them on the side walls at same line as your listening position and higher than your head. For regular (monopole) surround speakers, install them behind and above your head.
  • The distance between the two front speakers should be between 6 to 10 feet.
  • The distance between your main listening chair and the distance between the two speakers should be approximately the same. They should form approximately an equilateral triangle.

Speaker Setup (5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 Setup)
Depending on the number of speakers you plan to use in your home theater, the setup should follow one of the diagrams below:

The best place for a subwoofer is normally in the front corner about one foot away from the walls. Alternatively, you can use the crawl technique to find the best spot for your subwoofer. Read A Guide to Bass Management.
