You're totally right, store loyalty definitely does exist and many stores do count on it.
But IMO, there isn't a great amount of benefit to have store loyalty to a chain except for consistency in their customer service, which unfortunately may still vary depending on your luck.
That said, I do have store loyalty to several owner-operated stores and I will drive over three hours to get something from some of them because I get great personal service, good products and sometimes I'll even pay more for it because it does pay back more than just points on a reward program.
