This is why I don't worry about the ratings as much anymore. I know Chuck could be done after this season, but it has been that way since after Season Two. I know I am definitely getting all 13 of the planned episodes. I do hope we get the back 9, but beyond that I don't give it much thought. Same goes for Fringe, minus the whole 13 episodes talk of course. Now, if Chuck and Fringe don't get proper endings, I will be furious. I already know how I want Chuck to end.
The thing that it really screws with is watching new shows. Watching Chase and knowing it could be gone the very next week sucks. I still watch it and enjoy it, but the way things are does make it hard to bother with new shows as much as I would. Like you said, cable shows are much safer. A lot of them get lives that some network TV shows should get too.
