Season 7 is up there with 1 & 4 as far as I'm concerned.

Dexter is the quintessential example of a psychopath. He kills without remorse or regret and is able to justify his murderous behavior to himself, while fitting in within multiple social environments at the same time. A sociopath would likely not be able to handle a full time job in a law-enforcement office and a long-term romantic relationship with a stable partner the way that Dexter does.
[Show spoiler]They have certainly made Dexter more human, and as a result more vulnerable so I can see how that could generate some sympathy. However, during season 7 Dexter stopped holding his Dark Passenger responsible for his actions. This gave him the freedom to kill people who didn't fit the code. If anything that makes the character less sympathetic as he is now free to kill anyone he wishes, not just those the code demands, apparently wihout remorse.
