I guess we know what they were talking about when they mentioned a possible spin off now.
I feel like they started writing one season (the brain surgeon), then were told they had to end the series and started a new season mid-way through. Kind of frustrating.
Miami metro I guess just dropped the case? They don't seem to concerned that a serial killer is (as far as they know) still out there.

...but it's been quite awhile since the writers for Dexter were able to do any serious misdirection or turn in major plot twists that weren't telegraphed far in advance. I guess I was just hoping for more from this season since it's the final one. One last hoorah with the writers really bringing their A-games. But we're halfway through, and it's all been very underwhelming for me, especially since [Show spoiler]they're making it look like we're headed for yet another retread of a basic plot line that's been done twice already .

Yeah, the writers don't like to pull the trigger on their set ups. A few seasons have had everything being reset with no real consequence to anything that has happened.
I always said I would have liked Dexter to have been caught last season. And then have had this season been Miami Metro using Dexter to help catch a horrible serial killer (ala Hannibil Lector) - with Dexter escaping at the end to end the series (and could even lead to Dexter movies). Instead, we get - "how do we get a spin off out of this to make more money" from the studio execs. Ugh!
Just a side note, my wife and I laugh at how nice his nanny is to stay all day and night with his kid. Even on her Birthday he asks her to stay for hours at night. Not only that - Quinn sees Dexter out moonlighting as a detective (so he thinks) and isn't upset that his girlfriend is working late so Dexter can play cop? Seriously, sometimes these writers make me cringe.
