I'm with you Chip on this. Though I did go and see the movie a second time when it became available at the higher rate frame locally, and found it a superb visual treat, everything super sharp focus, totally engrossing. BUT Jackson was once again given full reign and like King Kong and Return of the King the film was far too long. In King Kong people were screaming "when are we getting to the damn island and the ape?", in Return "not another ending", in The Hobbit it was "too many dwarves, too many dwarves, when is the damn journey going to start?"
It is such a shame Jackson hasn't an internal editor in his brain, or somebody standing nearby that he trusts to tell him when enough is enough.
I wonder if the standard version will be the sharp focus of the 48 frame 3D version. If it is I may buy it, just for those visual treats, and the only really memorable scene, the meeting with Gollum, and the game in the cave!
