Honestly, it's a bit of a joke at this point how when you think about it the MCU despite decades upon decades of comic stories and supposedly having the best writing talent in the world for the movie industry can't seem to make up proper adaptations and instead are using a crutch of nostalgia. Logan was the swansong for Wolverine as a character imo. The whole "he's a variant" angle to drag him back can only work out so many times before fans do realise we actually need a proper new updated and modern X Men roster.

I loved the 90s shown and X Men 97s felt like a great continuation but live action, we need a proper reboot already. Fantastic Four is on their 3rd attempt now and looks like they've got a good angle on making it work. Just need the same for X Men.

Jennifer Lawrence Mystique, yes, but Rebecca Romijn didn't die, she just lost her powers. But that can easily be retconned as being another universe or she just got them back, since Magneto got his back/never fully lost them. Just like how Scott's death was retconned in Days of Future Past, and Xavier has died three times now. The X-Men films just kinda do what they want.

I was about to note that Romijn Mystique wasn't killed in The Last Stand (only "cured") but these are the Fox Marvel films we're talking about. What consistency.

Variants are a thing in this universe. There's no guarantee that she will be playing the same characters as before. Or any of them for that matter. Wolverine died in Logan and Hugh Jackman just headlined a movie bringing that character back last year
