Arrow FCC Will Allow Movie Studios to Broadcast Directly to Your Home

THE END OF MOVIE THEATERS? FCC Will Allow Studios To Send First-Run Films Directly To Consumers Over Secure TV

Quote:
The MPAA, which is the Hollywood studios' lobbying organization, just made this announcement about the FCC's very bad decision. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: once again, Big Media shows that it doesn't want to share its profits with anyone else. Today's action allows the major movie studios to undercut the entire process of theatrical release. It would put the struggling cinema chains virtually out of business. (Updates MPAA Asks FCC To Let Studios Transmit First-Run Films Directly To Consumers):

Washington, D.C. — The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), saying it was “in the public interest” today approved a request by the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) to permit recent movies to be sent directly to American households over secure high definition transmission lines from their cable or satellite providers prior to their release on DVD or Blu-ray.

Quote:
“This action is an important victory for consumers who will now have far greater access to see recent high definition movies in their homes. And it is a major step forward in the development of new business models by the motion picture industry to respond to growing consumer demand.” said Bob Pisano, President and Interim CEO of the MPAA. “We deeply appreciate the recognition by the FCC that recently released movies need special protection against content theft when they are distributed to home televisions.”

Specifically, the issue before the FCC was a request by the MPAA for permission to use selectable output control (SOC), which would allow televisions with digitally secure interfaces to receive high-definition content from a cable, satellite or IPTV provider, before its release on DVD or Blue-ray. Using SOC protects content because during the broadcast it essentially disables non-secure, analog outputs to avoid illegal circumvention and distribution of copyrighted material.

In its order, the FCC said: “On balance, this limited waiver will provide public interest benefits– making movies widely available for home viewing far earlier than ever before – without imposing harm on any consumers.”
“The first, and best way to view movies will always be in movie theaters – and nothing can replace the pleasure this brings to millions and millions of people all across our country and the globe,” Pisano said. “But for those people unable to make it to the theater and interested in viewing a recently released movie, thanks to the FCC, they will now have a new option. For other consumers who prefer standard, linear, on-demand or DVD or Blu-ray options, these services will be unchanged."

I read nothing in the article that says that this will be availble before or during the time it is in the theater. The article actually only says "before its release on DVD or Blue-ray" (Blu-ray spelling error is in the article)

it also further says:

Quote:
“The first, and best way to view movies will always be in movie theaters – and nothing can replace the pleasure this brings to millions and millions of people all across our country and the globe,” Pisano said. “But for those people unable to make it to the theater and interested in viewing a recently released movie, thanks to the FCC, they will now have a new option. For other consumers who prefer standard, linear, on-demand or DVD or Blu-ray options, these services will be unchanged."
which to me seems that after the theater run, but before the dvd or blu-ray release the movie will be available through this secure broadcast (probably at a fee). It even says that those that missed it in the theater have a new option...ie an option other than waiting for the dvd\blu-ray release or the cable\network premier

I realize that it's not your direct quote, but the title the "news source" gave the article is misleading and is not supported in the article\ruling.

I will still go to a movie theatre to watch it on a really big screen with a really loud sound system. That will never change. Until I build my own private home theatre system.

I totally agree with you !

For those that don't have A HT or the like . The movie theater is still going to be there as the way to see it the way people with HT do .

Seeing it at home on A TV compared to A movie theater ~ The Theater will win !

A family night out is a movie that they can all enjoy...skip the crap they overcharge for at the concession stand and a night out would run about 40.00..still the cheapest way and fun way to spend with the family..

I can't see this happening anytime soon, most people still enjoy going for a night out at the movies and seeing the latest blockbuster on a big screen..

Me too especially now that my theater has 1 XD screen which is pretty darn awesome. I saw the new Nightmare On Elm Street in there and i was blown away. I don't have an IMAX anywhere near me so this is the best i get.

I see this being similar to hotel room pay per view. They typically have a collection of movies that are not on disc but possibly still in theaters at the end of their run.

Yeah i was staying in a Double Tree on time maybe 3 or 4 weeks after Spiderman 2 came out and i saw it to rent on their TV for the cheap price of $19.99. I have no idea who would pay that much to see it at a hotel or even your house. I would rather see it in theaters or wait till Blu-ray.

I really wish film studios did allow an easier way to watch a movie, I haven't been to a theater since 2005 because of my disability.

Sorry for ranting but I hate waiting to see movies, I'm always the last person to see it and I have to hear all of the bragging about them from everyone else... or the ending/plot is spoiled because people can't seem to keep their mouth shut!

I hope you don't mind me asking; Is there no way you can make it to the theater?

Let's see, you want to stay out of the bar, you don't want to travel to anywhere off the hotel grounds. Yeah, $20.00 for a movie is not a problem.
Unless all your business is done, in which case hit the bar and have fun and pray your flight home isn't at 7:25am. Twenty years ago it got ugly (or absurdly silly) trying to get my boss to sign off on an expense report with two (2) $80.00 bar tabs (on the same night) when he was in Texas with me (he went to a ZZ Top concert while I was too tired from working and decided to stay at the hotel...plans change)). He did, and he said he felt bad about switching flights with me 7:25am instead of 2:00pm. NOTE: That was the last time I flew with a hangover (I wanted to die).

No way for me to go, I'm not strong enough to do anything right now... I only leave my home once a year and for that, I need to rent a car than have my brother physically put me into a car... way too much work just to go out and see a movie.
