Default Sony Vaio with Blu-ray

If a Vaio has a Blu-Ray player in it but only has the option to read and not write can you still burn regular DVDs ????

More than likely you are able to. ... I have a Vaio laptop with a Blu Ray drive and I have burned a handful of DVD's and CD's

I have a Blu Vaio too - reads BD, burns CD/DVD. I think thats pretty standard if the laptop (or desktop) comes withe the BD drive. My laptop even has an HDMI out so I can use to output to my TV in the bedroom.

That would be a BD Combo drive.
It will read BDs, and burn/read CDs and DVDs.

Which one?
One has "Blu-ray Disc™ playback, CD/DVD R/W"... play BDs & burn CD/DVD.

Others have "Blu-ray Disc™/CD/DVD R/W" plays and burns them all.

CTO you can specify player or burner.

I have AR series VAIOs.
Would love to get an AW - too bad I'm broke.

I have the FW245. Plays Blu, burns CD/DVD. I would highly recommend it if it was available with an OS other than Vista. Sony doesn't even have drivers available if you decide to use something else.

Is the Blu-ray drive in Sony's laptop region-free by any chance?

Mine was for a short time but once you watch a certain number of movies from one region, it locks. Or something like that.

With Blu-ray, region is not handled by the drive - it's handled by the software.
Use up the 5 changes... reinstall the software and get 5 more.

Or, get WinDVD, PowerDVD, *AND* ArcSoft and set each to their own regions.
Play whatever you want now.
