Default Blu - ray Drive in Sony Vaio.

I've got a Sony Vaio. It's fairly new. Bought it about six months ago. It's got a DVD drive in it that burns DVDs and CDs. I was wondering if it was possible to replace the drive with a Blu - ray drive that still burns DVDs but plays Blus as well.

Anybody know?

I've seen models at Fry's and Best Buy that the techs have worked on and it seemed like they added a few Blu - ray drives to the Vaios.

So, I was wondering if anyone else has done this. And how much it might cost.

Unless the machine has enough processor, and graphichs horsepower *AND* is HDCP compliant from drive to display - it will probably be a headache.

What model VAIO is it?

Model PCG - 7113L. It's a silver edition. The reason I ask is because I saw a Blu version at Best Buy. Shouldve looked to see if it was the same model, but it looked identical.

Ok, it's a NR Series.
I don't think the NR Series came with a BD drive.
I have no experience with replacing drives in a laptop other that stock to stock.
The drive should work for DVD and CD, but BD playback might not work.

Yeah, that sucks, because I really don't want to buy a new laptop just for a Blu - ray drive. And I don't want to have to buy an external Blu - ray drive. I want it to be portable. I watch a lot of movies on my cpu. This is frustrating.

+1 I have a Sony Vaio NR498E and it doesn't have the Blu-ray drive in it, but I must admit that SR looked ok on Win DVD during my plane flight.

I use Windows Media Player. I guess you get the same PQ with both.

How would I go about doing both of those? My graphics on the Vaio are 1280 x 800 if that helps.

So, if downloaded a 1080p video from the net, would there be a difference as far as downloading it from the net and playing it from a disc? I'm just trying to understand this. Where's the best place to get the drive replaced if I am able to do this.
