Do you think the upcoming slim PS3 will be able to bitsream lossless audio? - Blu-ray Forum

I know the slim PS3 is still a rumor, but I think we all know it will eventually be a reality. Do you think Sony will have listened to everyones gripes and update the hardware so we can finally at least have the option to bistream losless audio?

im going off topic so shoot me, but the one thing i wish for if they are going for hardware improvements is ir over hdmi. this way it can still use bluetooth for its gaming controllers yet use the ir from other compatible tv's or receivers to use universal remotes. i know that logitech just released their ps3 adapter, but if playstation wants a media center console then i think this would be a great improvement

I would rather it have an IR receiver so my Harmony One will work with it without having to buy an adapter.

I got the adapter, and it works great, but they should have included an IR port from the get go, but I'm sure the only reason they didn't is so people would either have to do without, or the obvoius reason...buy their bluetooth remote.

i agree that it should have been there to begin with. i really like the ir over hdmi though. i use it on my bedroom tv and i think that it would a very easy fix for playstation. possibly even a firmware updated could patch this.

Do you guys realize that Sony is making a slim sku to cut production costs. I would seriously doubt they will do any type of hardware modifications except using a smaller and cheaper CPU/GPU. Look how they cut PS2 compatibility in order to drop the price. However I did read some where they were going to make it so you could output through optical and HDMI simultaneously.

Seems like it will to me. why? well sony wanted to have it but the HDMI chipset thats used for bitstreaming wasn't available at the time sony was launching the PS3. so why wouldn't they use it now? i don't think it will cost anything extra.

Pretty sure all PS3's do. Mine does and I just bought it 2 months ago. For the menus anyway. I imagine this would be fixed if they added full bitstream support.

I doubt it ..

1. Very few people even know what it means .. which pretty much eliminates it from the major category.

2. Losing functionality compared to PCM .. is unlikely to make it a major selling point to a large number of people.

If your responding to Shin-Ra then it's all players ... not just PS3's. What Sin-Ra is talking about is only an issue for bitstreaming and not PCM. AFAIK it's an inherent limitation of that mode.. the decoding must be done by the player for PIP audio.. it can't be reconstructed/re-synched after bitstreaming to a receiver.
