Default Lossless audio and the PS3?

Is there a way to get the PS3 to work as a music server with a lossless audio source? I love the fact that I can create 500 song playlists, but hate the fact that the music that I've ripped is a lossy 320kbps AAC format. Is Sony going to allow us to rip music in lossless soon, or is there a program or application that I can use to play lossless music?

If you do not mind stremaing the music from an external computer, I have successfully configured TVersity to send ALAC files to my PS3. You need to add some codecs and other add-ins to make it work, but I did. I think you can also do the same for FLAC files.

My biggest issue with the PS3 was that it converted all my streamed music to 48kHz. When you have DTS encoded WAV files at 44.1kHz, they ended up being static through the PS3. I have since switched to the Apple TV and have not had any audio compatibility issues since.

I wouldn't want the PS3 to convert 44.1kHz files to 48kHz either. I dislike the "music modes" that come on most receivers, and prefer to listen to stereo music through my front L/R mains. Is it possible to play FLAC files from an external HDD on the PS3, or am I asking too much of the machine "that only does everything"?

HAHAHA. "It only does everything"

I think is you install Linux on your PS3, you will be able to play the files natively because you would add the capability within Linux.

I've never pursued this, just something I remember reading. I still standby my recommendation of using TVersity on another computer and let it transcode your FLAC files to WAV which is readable by the PS3.

Sorry I did not have better news for you.

Fair enough, thanks Lou. Not sure if I want to go through the hassle of setting up TVersity, as I don't normally leave the laptop on. Guess I'll keep on spinning CD's.

Glad you caught the joke, too.
