Default Looking to buy new receiver soon

So i just forked out the cash for a pair of tsi300's and a CS10 (HUUUUUUGE difference!! I'm LOVING it). Now i would like to upgrade the receiver since the one i have is a Pioneer sx-218 (THIS one looks exactly like it).

I have a PS3 connected by HDMI to the TV. And from the TV i have it connected to the receiver by digital optical. So when i watch blu-rays i can hear the dolbyhd codecs.

I am just very curious if a new receiver would make a huge difference with all the stuff i currently own? I'm sorry if its a blatant yes or no, but I am definitely a home theater noob. And if you guys have a suggestion for any new receivers then please throw some at me. My budget is $300-$500 due to the speakers driving me broke. This onkyo receiver is the one i have been eyeballing for now.

Im in the same situation. I also am looking to upgrade and i've really had my eyes on the Yamaha RX-V465 receiver. It has 4 HDMI inputs and supports both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Sells for about $330.

Might I make A suggestion to both of you !! Sense the BUG ~ UPGRADE-ITIS has got you when you buy A receiver make sure it has Pre-Outs on back for A future upgrade of an amp if you ever decide to go that route ! The 606 does not have them the 706 does & the 465 does not have them but the 663 does !!

The onkyo 606 has tremendous upside, except for one thing no pre-outs for separate amp. If this is not a concern I'd be all over it.

If this Marantz SR5003 is in your budget I would seriously consider this as your next investment.

Marantz has been on the leading edge of capturing the high end consumers praise and support. Their power ratings are really close to stated. Build quality and reputation is second to non, plus you get all the newest features and most of all will allow you to implement more power without having to buy a new AVR.

good luck with your search.

I think your link is bad..... Here it is corrected

I would suggest the Marantz over most others in this price range too.

I just picked up the Pioneer VSX 919AH-K, $350 at Amazon. 120w x 7, HD decoding, just been playing with it this weekend but so far I love it. The 1019 is also available for $500, only big difference is video upscaling up to 1080p. I didn't need it, so I went with the 919. Same amp inside. The iPod control is great, even my wife noticed how much better it sounded than my old receiver. Great performance on a small budget.

What are some other receivers that have Pre-Outs that are between $300 and $500, or do they not exist. Also, when I'm looking at the specifications, does it just say "Pre-Outs," or does it say something else?

The only one that comes to my mind with pre-outs under $500 is the Yamaha 665.

I have had the Yamaha RX-V665 for a little over 2 months now.
It does have a Full set of Pre-Outs and a Wide Array of Features as well.

I caught it at HH Gregg for $429.00 and absolutely LOVE IT .

It has All the Features I could possibly ask for in this Price Range(and a lot I will probably Never Use).
The sound is spectacular for a $500(its normal price)receiver and it really has good clarity, detail, low end,and some Headroom. It doesnt feel as if its running at Full Steam ALL of the time.It sounds like it still has a good deal of power to spare(and I do watch my Blus with the Volume at a Pretty Good Level).

I know some receivers in this price range feel as if they are being pushed to the max 90% of the time when I watched a movie at my normal volume levels(and they had very little power left to spare without fear of distortion setting in).
The Yamaha seems as if it is running at maybe 60% of its capability when I watch my Blus(leaving a good amount of power left to spare before I would ever worry about distortion setting in).
I know Onkyo and Pioneer both make good receivers in the under $500.00 price range. But I do not know if there models possess pre-outs at that price point.

Above the $500 range there are an enormous amount of options.Marantz,Denon, and Pioneer Elite come to mind as Front Runners.
But Onkyo,Sony ES,Yamaha, and A Few other Brands Make Great Products in that Price Range As Well.

Now there may be people who arent fond of the Yamaha RX-V665 and to each his own.I am just speaking from experience as an owner of this model.

I also own Rotel and Adcom Amps and Surround Sound Processors(so I do know a little about the higher end).
But you will receive a Great Deal of Outstanding Advice from the many Knowledgeable Members here,so just listen,do a little research yourself, audition as many as you can,and go from there.

Good Luck and I hope you find the right receiver for your Home Theater System.

Harman Kardon AVR254.... I have the 354 and haven't had a single problem out of it. Plenty of power and sounds clean and clear.

Just one last straight forward question! Will upgrading from my current receiver (look at my initial post) make a HUGE difference in the overall sound? I feel the speakers I have are pretty awesome as it is, but will upgrading the receiver make them shine A LOT more or just a little?

I think it will, as the amp in your new receiver should be a good bit stronger and more efficient, providing a "cleaner" sound and will make your speakers sound as if they are more balanced and with better depth, IMO. Just make sure to use the calibration set-up that comes with your receiver. Good luck!

Probably only a little, so don't expect huge gains! There are however some tweaks you can incorporate that will have greater effect on the performance of your combined new receiver and speaker setup.

1. Make sure you are running some decent speaker wire/cables. I use 12 AWG on all of mine, but 14-16 might also suffice adequately.
2. Speaker placement. If you have the room/flexibility to move your speakers outward/inward and forward/backward, I would strongly suggest you test out different placement positions.

im looking to get a yammy 5.1 speaker setup below (unless anyone has a better suggestion for this price range - its about $900-$1000 in total)

Yamaha NS325F Floor
• 200 W Dynamic Power
• Sensitivity (dB/2.83V,1m) : 88
• Frequency Response : 40 Hz - 50,000 Hz
• Input Power (Maximum/Normal) : 200 W / 50 W
• Impedance : 6 ohms

Yamaha NS-C325
• Frequency Response 60 Hz - 50 kHz
• Sensitivity 88 dB/2.83 V/1 m
• Input Power (Maximum / Nominal) 200W / 50W
• Crossover Frequencies 2.5 kHz
• Impedance 6 Ohms

Yamaha NS-M325 Surrounds
• Frequency Response: 65 Hz - 50 kHz
• Sensitivity: 86 dB/2.83 V/1 m
• Input Power (Maximum / Nominal): 120W / 30W
• Crossover Frequencies: 2.5 kHz
• Impedance: 6 Ohms

Yamaha YST-SW325B Subwoofer
• High 170W Dynamic Power
• 20cm (8”) Multi-Range Driver with Magnetic Shielding
• 25-180Hz Low Frequency Reproduction

would a rx-v663 or a vsx-919AH-K power this more efficiently?

from my understanding, a receiver tends to wear out quicker (or even just its overall sound quality) after a while if used constantly at its max capacity, or even close like 90%. the yammy has 95wpc at 8ohm and the pioneer has 140wpc at 6ohm.

but then there's the issue of the underlying quality often not seen in the specs. for instance, many people say yammy's sound is cleaner and stronger than pioneer models and like above, and they often use it at 60-70% of its capacity.

but then again, the vsx-919ah is a much more recent model. the rx-v663 is a year older if im not wrong. any comments?

Reyz, are you asking about the speakers in this thread, the receivers listed(same in your other thread) or BOTH.??

Speakers, yes for $1000 I could come up with a better set.
Receiver, still go with the pre-outs.
