I already have a Sony DVD Home Theater systme that I absolutely love!! Question is can I just buy a Blu-ray Receiver and keep all the original speakers that came with the DVD Receiver. I was looking into the BDV-E300. It would be an awful waste if I bought the home theater in a box with speakers because they would sit in a closet and not be used. I just wanted to buy the Blu-Ray receiver. If this is at all possible, where can I buy it at??

I don't spend much time looking at the HTiB (Home Theater in a Box) player/receiver/speaker packages but I don't think there's a lot of options in Blu-ray receivers.
My advice would be to pick up a stand alone Blu-ray player or PS3 and a regular AVR (Audio Video Receiver) and use the speakers you currently have for now. If your current sub is passive (doesn't plug into the wall) you might have to pick up a new sub as well. I would suggest spending some time in the Blu-ray players sub forum, AVR sub forum, HTiB sub forum, and subwoofer sub forum before you spend any money. Good luck. |

Honestly, if you're using the HTiB speakers, you're not really going to hear much of a difference, if any, with the lossless formats. Speakers are the most important part of your sound system. A great receiver will small low quality speakers isn't going to change much. If you want though, the Onkyo 507, Denon 590, and Pioneer 819 are popular choices for lossless decoding and you can buy them on Amazon or newegg. For the price of the BDV-E300 you get any of those receivers and a good pair of front (left, center, right) speakers from a good company like Polk. That's my recommendation.
EDIT - Just reread your post and I guess you don't have a Blu-Ray player. Well, you need that first. Prices have come down and you can get a good one for -$200. Get that first and build up the rest of the system as funds become available. Last edited by Kryptonic; 08-20-2009 at 02:02 PM. |

Before you go spend money on a receiver, check the impedance rating of the speakers of your HTiB. A lot of times HTiBs use an "unusual" impedance rating of 3 Ohms, and if you try running these speakers on a regular AV receiver you'll burn up the receiver.
