Default Commerical appliances in Residential Kitchens

Anyone have electrical experience in household wiring? I want to use a commercial portable cooktop in a "kitchenette/wet bar" area I am putting in my basement. It's 220-240V and draws 24 amps max. I put a 30 amp breaker in the panel, and I ran 6 AWG cable to the location of the receptacle, which I am placing >24" above the countertop, to avoid GFCI requirements. It's really not that big of a deal at this time, since what I am doing is not inherently unsafe, but I could not find in my references or on the internet a source addressing such appliances in residences.

You may ask why not install a permanent cooktop, which would avoid all of these questions, but counter space is limited to about 30". I otherwise have two 20 amp GFCI circuits serving the countertop and fridge, one 15 amp circuit for the hood fan and another 15 amp circuit for the lighting.

You didn't ask a specific question. What exactly do you need to know?

Sorry, you are indeed correct, but I thought it would be inferred. What I want to know is if commerical kitchen appliances, and/or 220-240V above counter receptacles are addressed in the National Electric Code and what the requirements are. If some day I have to sell the house, it is best if everything is up to current standards.

The NEC doesn't specifically address you question about commercial-grade appliances. However -- I'm guessing your local building code may be more stringent. You obviously already know that GFCI's in the kitchen are required for general use, non-dedicated receptacles. A 220v receptacle wouldn't fit that description, so my opinion is that you are fine.

Your statement about what you're doing not being inherently unsafe is accurate.
