Exclamation Netflix declares Blu-ray winner too! (in 2005)

Quote:
Netflix has declared Blu-ray the winner, over HD-DVD in the next generation DVD format war.

“As many know there’s been a format war. Two formats have been proposed as a successor to DVD, one sponsored by Warner primarily and one sponsored by Sony. Warner is HD DVD and Sony is Blu-ray. I think it is pretty clear that Blu-ray has won. Even Warner has agreed to license and to release technology to Blu-ray, only Universal has not made a commitment at this point, so I think the format wars are a thing of the past and I think it’s going to be Blu-ray. I think the content will get priced at a 20% premium. I think it’s going to roll out slowly over time.”

I am going to tend to agree and predict Blu-ray the winner, just seems like all the right cards have landed in their hand. Now give me High Def DVD’s!

Yeah but sadly it's from November 23rd, 2005. I'd like to see something that says June, 2007 on it.

It'll be kind of funny if both formats stay equal and none of them end up dying.

That's how DVD wins, unforunately.

Either way BD or HD DVD will never surpass DVD. Your average person doesn't care or doesn't know about BD. On Demand already has more usage than Bd or HD DVD and will continue to grow at a faster pace even if there was only one format.

Never say Never. Once analog TV signals become obsolete and HD is a standard, people (your average person as you say) will want HDTV's and once HDTV's become a product owned by the masses, many of those people will want HD content to view on their new TV, thus buying into movies that are Hi-Def (BD or hd dvd). I don't think standard DVD will die anytime soon, but I do think BD will surpass it in time.

Right, once the people see that the images they are getting from ota tv are better then vod and dvd, they will want some sort of format that can fill their hd needs.

That is just plain silly thinking. VHS was replaced by DVD and Blu-ray will replace DVD if HD DVD dies. Once the format matures and prices for hadware are in the $100 to $200 range, the masses are going to start replacing all their old outdated DVD hardware with the new technology. It always happens that way. But before that can happen we need HD DVD to die (period).

I also believe that unless the movie theaters change they will go by way of the dinasaur too. I just watched Knocked Up at the local Cinemark and it was like watching regular DVD. I could not wait to get home and pop in a Blu-ray movie.
