Default QVC Misinforming about Blu-ray!

After gaming for a bit i was channel surfing and stopped on QVC channel. I just wanted to see the 73in Mitsubishi DLP. Anyway right after they were showing a upconverting dvd player. The guy was listing the reasons to get it and so on. He then said you could get it a Blu-ray player and in a stupid tone "But those are still how much now?" Then said you could get a Blu-ray player instead but that you would have to re purchase all movies that you own currently on BD! He didn't say Blu-ray players can play dvds!! I guess they are not upto date on BD player prices and specs. Or maybe it's some stupid sales tactic? I know some people that buy stuff from them sometimes wich is fine. I don't have anything against QVC but i was shocked that was said. I would think they would possibly make sure they have their info correct since they are selling products.

Maybe they have investments in upscaling DVD players? Like how all the people pushing for digital downloads also "coincidentally" are involved with HDD and server companies.

Was the guy who said that about Blu-ray a QVC host or was he a rep from Mitsubishi?... Only asking because I've seen Blu-ray players on QVC quite a bit (usually the crappy Sharp models) and they always say how blown away they are by the quality of Blu-ray over DVD... Just seems hard to imagine someone giving bad pointers why not to buy a BD player when they sell them...

And typically those people wouldn't even know what Blu is. They would buy that new 73" HDTV and hook it up to basic cable with composite a/v cables.

They give you a number to call in about testimonials....they probably wouldn't listen to you, but I would have called in in a heartbeat to correct them

It was the host...and was not the rep of mitsubishi. I don't remember what the brand of the dvd player was. I do know it was not mitsubishi. Was'nt paying attention enough to see a # to call.

I know they have a good price IMO for a Panasonic Blu-ray player. It's the 60 for $249 I believe. It comes with a HDMI cable. You can split it into 5 payments

according to the OP's post, they didnt do anything wrong, They were trying to sell the upvertor and failed to mention a BD player plays DVDs right?? He didnt say a BD player doesnt play DVDs. He failed to mention it as it didnt help sell what he had on display. You wouldnt wanna go to the Ford Dealership and have him sell you the features on a Chevy would you?

Fixed that for ya.

TV pitch men/women seldom know much of anything about the products they sell, unless they specialize in that type of product. They're hired for their mass appeal, energy, enthusiasm, and ability to create urgency to buy.

Most times they get a script the day of, or day before, air time which gives bullet points and selling features on the items they'll be pitching later.

This guy is obviously a dolt. Who pitches a 73" HDTV and then wouldn't talk about how awesome HD content is? It would be like selling iPods and telling your audience how lame iTunes is. But I think the real stupidity is following up the sale of a HDTV with a cheap up-converting DVD player. Should've followed with Blu-ray!

QVC is a real blight on capitalism in general. It preys upon elderly women and shut-ins who have little knowledge of many of the products advertised. The markups are outrageous.

Apparently so considering their net revenue for the last 2 years was nearly $13 Billion...

Meh. I disagree, respectfully. One could argue that QVC, HSN and their ilk are only in business because of elderly women, shut-ins, and people who sit up all night channel surfing. They aren't being preyed upon--they want that stuff!

Nobody forces these people to watch TV, or to pick up and call, or to pay more than market value because they failed to do their own research or exercise some self-restraint, or to simply change the freaking channel or turn the TV off and read a book. The markup might be good, but it's not as if this stuff is being sold so far over MSRP you could call it a gouge. (Now, door-to-door salesmen hocking a $4,000 vacuum cleaner... that's a gouge.)

Products like OxyClean, Snuggie, and just about anything from RonCo only persist because of the afore-mentioned homebodies and their desire to part with their money for products they perceive as useful, regardless of what you or I think of it. It isn't fair to vilify the maker or the vendor. If a product sells well, it's obviously because people enjoy it. That's the great thing about capitalism--if there's a market, it becomes timeless "as seen on TV" gold (ChiaPet). If not, it goes away (Magic Meatball).

All good points you make in your post. As a strong believer in free market capitalism, of course they are serving a niche in the marketplace that looks highly profitable. It says more about the demographic groups that make up the bulk of their customer base than anything else.

Their excess profit margins indicate that there is a lack of competition serving that market. I suspect the enormous capital required to run a national television channel is a barrier to entry in this market.
