Default QVC debuts Venturer HD DVD player

From an article posted on The Register.

Breaking News Venturer's anticipated cut-price SHD7001 HD DVD player went on sale this morning on the QVC home shopping channel for less than was expected. At £162.62 (or two easy payments of £84.96), it's the cheapest standalone high definition DVD player on the market.

First announced at IFA, we covered the SHD7001 in back in September. Then in November it was announced the QVC home shopping channel would have sell the device exclusively.

According to the presenters, the device is only on sale until midnight tonight. However, we suspect the deal will be repeated again at a later date. The player comes bundled with HD DVD copies of Hulk and Troy, plus a voucher entitling you to five free HD DVDs via a mail-in offer from the European HD DVD Promotion Group.

It also comes with an HDMI cable, though the player provides component-video and composite-video outputs too. There's a 10/100Mb/s Ethernet port on the back for link HD DVDs to online content, and both digital optical and analogue audio outputs

QVC must have got a job-lot of these to get rid of. I feel sorry for any potential purchasers having these 'soon to be obsolete' objects thrust upon them. No doubt the presenters will make them out to be the buy of the century.

Shopping channel: The last gasp of a dying concept.

As we know, everyone buys their premium A/V equipment from shopping channels. Oh wait, they never do.

Seems kind of expensive for a Venturer are they only selling them on the shopping channel because no actual stores wanted them?

QVC is known for selling job lot end of line stuff that was surplus or just did not sell.

So sad really for what is supposed to be tier 2 cutting edge technology.

Oh the shame.

EXACTLY.

HD-DVD has now officially won the war. We must assume that at least one HD-DVD player will be sold on QVC. Now if the player is sold in any given second, it is only logical to assume that this trend will continue for every following second!!!!1

There are 60 seconds in a minute and god knows how many in an hour or a day.... So when a player is sold every second..... that's like at least 30 players a day!!!! (Which is more units of HD DVD players than PS3s sold in the month of January 1987) Everything points to an HD DVD victory in '08!!!!11111one

THAT one is actually an exception. Oxyclean has become mainstream.

Pretty soon they will be selling the "Venturer" player on those late night, like 2-3 in the morning infomercials on regular network TV. How pathetic.

Make fun of them if you want but if nothing else they are getting the name and format in front of many people ...recognition down the line can't hurt them for j6p.

I'm not sure but I think these Venturer models are actually repackaged Toshiba HD-A1.

Venturers here are really Tosh A3s. They are both made by Alco in China. Is there an E3 in Europe?
