Ok, this is not a typical what to get question, so please read on.
I recently bought a new 32" LCD HDTV for the bedroom, and I have no dvd player whatsoever in there. So I was leaning toward getting a new PS3 Slim for the bedroom as a BD player, gaming console while being able to go online as well. Meanwhile, I also wanted to get a stand alone BD player for the living room for a while. For the time being, I can get one of each but not both, so what do you guys think should I buy first? |

Hmm... guess getting a PS3 slim should be done before getting a stand alone for the living room, huh? |

standalones do have some advantages..
they will be quieter in operation than the slim.. especially when loading/ejecting discs the drive on the smil makes a lot of noise ejecting discs but this aint an issue really when you think about it dvd upcaling is better on some players.. a lot dont rate the ps3 as a dvd upscaler but i think its fine the other issue is no infared remote control.. i have a logitech adapter which allows me to control the ps3 with my harmony remote.. but its an extra expense/device i'd rather not have to contend with it doesnt have analague outputs if you have an older receiver.. that said of course the slim ticks a lot boxes - fast loading time, future compatible via firmware moreso than standalones.. now it bistreams everything.. as well as decoding so you have both options.. plus of course it is a games machine, and you can use it to listen to music/browse your photos and browse the web.. if you have the money and not interested in the media/gaming abilities of the ps3 - i'd probably say go for something like the oppo bd83... seems to be the best all round player available (debatable) |

How did you set up that account to stream with netflix on the slim? |

Should work fine for a while, but I've never really believed that any gaming console should be intended as a permanent replacement for a dvd/blu-ray player - especially for those who watch movies frequently. Surely that must put a good dent in the life-span.

At this point, since the slim is so much quieter, I can only recommend a stand alone if you NEED analog outs.
If you want to take advantage of multi-channel lossless audio....stand alone. If you have no idea what I'm saying....slim. |
