How good of a player is the PS3 vs. a Stand alone BR Player.
I am wondering whey people would buy just a standalone player. I am not judging them I am just curious |

1)It's bluetooth so my 890 pro doesn't work with it. 2)The fan in that thing is loud. 3)I can't put the ps3 in a cabinet with all of my other A/V gear. |

Ignore this. The fan in the PS3 is not loud at all. I've never heard the fan in mine during a game or movie and usually never even hear it when I'm switching discs.
There is only one reason to buy a standalone rather than a PS3. The current PS3 models can't and likely will never be able to bitstream the lossless audio codecs. You'll still get the lossless audio through LPCM though. If you must have bitstream then buy a standalone. If you don't know what that means you'll be fine with a PS3. |

My 60GB PS3 works wonderfully. Maybe some PS3s have louder fans (made by a different factory?), but mine is quiet and not really audible at all in a completely silent room.

I actually own both PS3 and stand alone and consider them to be equal. Although I love the bluetooth I hate the fact I can't control it with a universal control. (harmony 890) Hopefully they will realease a IR, RF bluetooth controller this year.

No, that is the only problem with this setup... there is no power on or off.
The other issue that I've found is that the 880 cannot scroll fast enough down the list of MP3 albums on my PS3... a bit annoying, especially when I have 500+ CDs to scroll through (I also have an issue with the way the PS3 displays the music information... iTunes being excellent in that regard). I do not know how good stand alones are but the ps3 bluray drive is great. Its not like when the ps2 came out with their dvd player. That was an alright player. The ps3 bluray player is really good. And for the price you also get a great gaming system and internet( it not that great but at least it i there). I never have any issues with games, BD or DVD or CD on my ps3.

It is a very good "stand-alone" player... that is what I use it for, in addition to listening to MP3s from the hard drive, displaying photos via the built-in slide shows, etc.
I also use TVersity to serve files directly from my laptop. Look for other threads on here for additional, similar, topics on the PS3 as a Blu-ray player. Did I mention the PS3 will be upgradeable to Profile 2.0? Bogdan |

The PS3 is a really good blu-ray player and can also do a lot of other things (besides gaming). It's probably the fastest loading player (some of the standalones can take quite a while to load a movie), is profile 1.1 currently and will be updated to be 2.0 soon. So, it's an ideal choice right now if you think you'll care 2.0 profile features (i.e. web-enabled features). While some appear to have loud PS3s, neither of my 60-gig PS3s are loud (can't even tell they're on) but if you're concerned about that, the 40-gig PS3s are supposed to be even quieter. The shape of the PS3, does mean that it needs to be on top of the other components in your A/V rack or on it's own shelf (mine sits on top of my VCR/DVD recorder).
But, the PS3 doesn't decode DTS-HD MA yet (PS3s just gets the 1.5 mbps core track currently) and the standalones might have more flexible audio connections (more analog outs, etc.). The standalones also use a traditional IR remote so it works better with a universal remote. The PS3 uses bluetooth for it's remote, which means no line of sight issues, and personally I love that but I don't use a universal remote. |
