Ignore this. The fan in the PS3 is not loud at all. I've never heard the fan in mine during a game or movie and usually never even hear it when I'm switching discs.

There is only one reason to buy a standalone rather than a PS3. The current PS3 models can't and likely will never be able to bitstream the lossless audio codecs. You'll still get the lossless audio through LPCM though. If you must have bitstream then buy a standalone. If you don't know what that means you'll be fine with a PS3.
