Default Green dots(pixels?) on PS3 using Samsung LN37A550.

I hope someone can help. When playing bluray movies on the PS3 in 1080p I will see random green dots all in one horizontal line. If I restart bluray playback the dots may go away or come back in a different configuration but they are always on the same line, about midway through the tv. I am using a Samsung LN37-A550.

I have an xbox and have never seen these dots while playing games. I never see them during 1080p ps3 game playback either, only when I watch blurays. DVD is always fine as well. I've tried switching hdmi cables and messing around with the ps3 settings and they won't go away 100% of the time. Has anyone ever heard of this? I don't know if my tv is defective or the ps3.

I think I know what you are talking about. But I don't have an answer as I am wondering as well.

Miss March was infested with these.

I'm suddenly getting green dots now also. Seems to be just on Bluray movies. Any ideas how to fix it?

It appears that the problem with the PS3 rather than the TV. But not sure how to fix it. Can you try different configuration settings. Like 24Hz on/off etc. to see whether you could see any variation to the problem. I expect this is consistent problem for all blu-rays.

Right now I have the PS3 hooked up to HDMI3. I am going to try HDMI2. I used to have the ps3 plugged into that port but then I hooked up my computer which needed it. I'll let you guys know if it works.

I don't recall ever seeing these dots when it was plugged into HDMI2. I will let you guys know how it goes. I have tested various settings on the PS3 however it seems that the problem still persists.

I put in a bluray once that asked me to download something off of bluray live. I wonder if that screwed something up?

Since you have multiple HDMI inputs, one them at the TV end could be faulty as well... You will find out soon. Always switch off all equipment when connecting/disconnecting HDMI.

Mine seems to be the PS3 and I don't see any on the menu or with standard dvds. Just blurays.

Out of curiosity, how many restarts of the bluray or returns to the top menu does it take for the green lines/dots, to go away? Usually after 3 reboots mine are gone. I don't think it's ever taken 4. It would be strange if it's always three...

This seems to be a PS3 issue. Interesting... Where your PS3 is kept - is it in a cabinet or out in open?

i have the same problem. little green pixles that outline shading areas. they move and react with the video. but mine happens in ps3 game play, ps2 emulation gameplay, and even in the xmb background 'flowing ribbon'. it happens every once in a while. but if the system boots up with this problem, it will not go away untill i turn off the ps3 for at least a min. but it never just 'happens' out of nowhere, i think it has to do with the HDCP handshake. ive tried both hdmi inputs and it still happens, ive switched it with my 360's hdmi (dont kill me) which doesnt have problems, still the same. they both share the same cabinet which has 3 rear exhaust fans to pull the heat out of the back. so... yea.. i just turn it all off then on again.

i'm relatively sure it's your ps3/gpu overheating, make sure the ventilation isn't getting blocked by something or just bad system placement. i was getting this same problem after leaving two controllers set on the "front-top" and "back-top" area (if you have the ps3 standing upright). the front top area expels actually a lot of heat so make sure that is clear. good news if there is any is that if u fix this it won't come back if it's not too late, mine happened a few months ago and hasn't come back or affected anything since.

I was thinking of this possibility. PS3 needs good ventilation otherwise it can become too noisy as well.

Hello friends. My PS3 sits on a desk in open air about 6-7 inches from the wall. I used to have it standing vertical, now it's laying down. The green dots are showing up more and more and I think I'm going to have to pay for a replacement. I am going to try watching a bluray on the tv I have in my living room to see if they still show up. If they don't show up then I will test my friends PS3 on my tv.

The ps3 was kept in my bedroom where it got pretty hot. I live in CA and we've had a few heat waves and a hot summer. I'll keep updating this thread so that it may help people in my situation.

Edit: Strangely enough, I watched Pan's Labyrinth and I did not see the green dots in a line. The picture was perfect.

It is interesting to hear that you didn't notice green dots on one of the movies. Before that did you get green dots consistently for both movies and games. Anyway it is good news. It is worth checking this movie again. Haven’t you changed any aspect of your configuration. Any rearrangements, different cables etc.

I've had the green dots issue in the past. I disconneted the hdmi cable from the ps3 and then re-connected it right away and the green dotted lines went away. I've been using this method to fix the issue when it comes up every now and then. It sucks and I don't know what causes it, but a simple dissconnect/reconnect does the trick every time.

Okay, interesting. A loose connection between the cable and the HDMI port is a possibility. Anyhow, hot plugging/unplugging is not healthy for HDMI. HDMI connector design is not the best, a power rail could touch a data rail when inserting the cable since the rails are narrow. This could destroy the interface circuits. Next time try to disconnect and reconnect after switching off and see whether it works. Have you tried any other cables.

Hmm interesting! It is possible that a loose connection could be a problem. I have an xbox and a ps3. I only see the green dots during bluray playback. I switched hdmi cables once and I did not see any green dots. The next day I watched a movie and they were back.

I bring my PS3 over to a friends house at least once a month to play singstar so I am unplugging cables and moving the ps3 more than the average user. Is it possible that a bumpy car right messed something up? I will test a different hdmi cable this weekend and see how it goes. I am going to try to figure this out before Oct 04. I would rather trade my ps3 in to gamestop for $150 and then pay $150 to get a slim than to pay $150 to fix my busted console.

I am trying to think whether or not I've unplugged the hdmi cable with the tv/PS3 on. I think I may have at least once. Could this cause damage only to the HDMI cable or could it break the PS3 as well? I'll feel really stupid if it's an HDMI cable issue. I've only tried two hdmi cables that I own. One is fairly new and the other I use for the xbox.

Another question is whether or not a firmware update screwed something up. The scary thing is I haven't really heard about this problem before. I doubt I am the only one with the problem.

I do not expect a bumpy car to cause this issue. However, more than average cable insertions might cause this since that could make the connector loose. Check whether the cable fits well into the port without any play. Do this while everything is sw off.

The TV and/or PS3 port can be damaged not the cable. Once cable is connected it should be a nice fit. There shouldn't be any play. If there is a play it is worth trying another cable.

I have heard of this but the cause is not known. Some people think that it could be the PS3 processor. Try blu-rays when you are in your friends place.

Syncguy thanks for all the help. I found out that it was in fact my PS3. I tried it on another tv and still had the green dots. I bought the new PS3 slim and everything is working perfectly as expected. Case closed.
