Default Help with PS3 Blu-ray issue

Hey Y'all:

First let me say that they look great, but I am running into audio issues, and am hoping someone here might have an answer for me.

My current setup:

PS3 HDMI -> Onkyo TX-SR805 ( :-D ) HDMI -> Sony 1080p projo.

I cannot get the PS3 to send a Dolby TrueHD signal to my reciever. I know that the PS3 cannot do this, even though it has HDMI 1.3.

I also know that we can install Linux on the PS3. Is there a Linux codec or driver that will play the BlueRays and beable to send a DTHD signal to my reciever?

Thanks!

I don't think the ability to send Dolby TrueHD out is totally software based or Sony probably would have done that already. Either way the PS3 will decode the Dolby TrueHD track locally and then send out the audio in PCM. Either way it is the same thing, you will not be losing anything in the quality.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think in your case you would want to change your audio setting to "Bit Stream" instead of PCM. It's buried somewhere in the system settings menu. When in doubt refer to your online instruction manual that is located on the PS3's network tab.

ATM Linux is unable to playback BD movies off of BD discs natively. I've heard that the Ubuntu guys have gained partial BD support in Linux, but without access to the PS3's RSX video card perfect playback is all but impossible (atm).

I don't think he needs to do this with HDMI. The PS3 decodes the TrueHD signal and sends it over the HDMI cable as a PCM signal. It doesn't make sense to change the output setting away from PCM. I had to change to "Bit Stream" only because I am currently using an optical cable.

I don't think you will ever find a piece of software that can overcome a hardware limitation. Firmware can make a difference but there is only so much it can do too. You can't loosen a nut with a screwdriver.

Did you read the other thread on TrueHD? The responses helped me to understand what is going on. I am still a novice when it comes to TrueHD but am trying to help out. We'll see what others have to say.
