Default OLED technology appears to be moving along well

Ok this ain't TV related really, but in order for OLED TV's to be around, the technology will probably need to have some versatility. Anyway, samsung is saying that 1/2 of its touch-screen (high-end class) phones will have OLED displays which is a big leap from what I thought -mabey just 1 model. This is great, i'll get an oled phone once they come down to the $299 range and keep in mind that this is probably the biggest step needed for phones to be movie players as well as things that you can make calls from.....

The problem I've heard about OLEDs is their screens last about 15,000 hours while an LCD can last up to 60,000. I imagine this is why they haven't exactly become mainstream yet...ew.

I hope the prices will come down in about 10 years when I am in the market for a new TV. Just got a 60inch Kuro Elite so I will be fine for a very long time. I hope.

Wolverine, tru dat....but this is also being looked at and refined. Actually, the biggest stumbling block in the life of these things is the blue lights that they use....and perhaps this link will allow the TV's to pump less power and put less wear and tear on the blue diodes

I have high hopes for OLED in the future. Just gotta solve that life expectancy problem, some production cost issues and BAM! I get a new tv.

They've been implementing OLED in a number of things, Picture frames, MP3 players, phones & lots of other tiny little screens. There are just so many things that need to be worked out to make OLED fees-able in the real world, but sooner or later & with TONS of money they will hopefully prevail!! I'll wait for the 2nd or even 3rd Gen. 50" OLED so they have a chance to work out the bugs & whatever other issues arise. I can wait...Pioneer KURO has made sure of that.

Control4 also uses OLED in one of their handheld remotes.

LMAO!

I didnt know about the life expectancy, I actually thought it was longer than LCD. I did know the clarity is supposed to be like almost realistic.

I was looking at tvs today and saw all these new LCD with LED backlight sets from samsung. They are so thin and the black levels and colors looked amazing. What is the advantage of OLED over a regular LED backlight LCD?

i would guess everything but the fact that it doesnt last as long

from wiki
"OLEDs enable a greater range of colors, gamut, brightness, contrast (both DR and static) and viewing angle than LCDs because OLED pixels directly emit light. OLED pixel colors appear correct and unshifted, even as the viewing angle approaches 90 degrees from normal. LCDs use a backlight and cannot show true black, while an off OLED element produces no light and consumes no power. Energy is also wasted in LCDs because they require polarizers that filter out about half of the light emitted by the backlight. Additionally, color filters in most color LCDs filter out two-thirds of the light; technology to separate backlight colors by diffraction has not been widely adopted.[citation needed]

OLEDs also have a faster response time than standard LCD screens. Whereas the fastest LCD displays currently have a 2ms response time (manufacturer's quote), an OLED can have less than 0.01ms response time"

OLED will become mainstream, but I believe it will be driven by industries other than home entertainment - the ability to have such thin displays, and even 'rollable' displays will gain traction in industries such as health care etc.

Once that happens costs of scale will come down and we'll start seeing it in our living rooms.

I hope that happens before my Kuro gives out years from now

Wow that is impresive. Spec wise they sound amazing. But i must say i was impressed with how good these new LCDs looked, hard to imagine OLED beeing noticeably better but i guess we will find out the minute they start making them in larger sizes. It feels like it's still going to be a couple years and when they do come out with 40" + they will probably be twice the price of lcds with led backlight and most plasmas.

^^ yeah they will be more expensive at first but think about 10-15 years down the road...the first plasmas were 10,000 for a 55 inch and now look at where they are priced, not to mention it's been said that OLED is actually cheaper to make than LCD and plasma were at the same stage in their lifetimes

I don't want to wait more then 3 years . I want it now!
The sooner it's released (even at $10k-$20k) the sooner it will drop.

lol i dont think anyone wants to wait but i'd rather have them release a good product than a total piece of s**t that gives it a bad name and hurts its chances of being widely adopted

just in case anybody missed this, i'm gonna repost. Most of the hours given in the specs section for these tv's mention something like 15 or 16K hours but fail to mention that this is only for 3/4 power or whatever. You won't get that much w/ full power. This more efficient blue OLED that I gave a link to though is great b/c it will use 25% less power to get the same picture which will make the diode better by letting you get a brighter picture or make it last a lot longer, perhaps by 20% or so.
