Default Likelihood of Blu-ray losing?

Hello,

I would just like to start off by saying I own a PS3, and am a new blu-ray enthusiast.

I have recently become concerned over the ps3 price drop situation (scam aspects of it for instance). And if you don't believe it's true, it has been confirmed by IGN which is usually very reliable. Also, the price of HD-DVD players is already at $299, and will definitely go lower in the holidays. It is concerning me that most consumers will just shop based on price, and since hd-dvd is so much cheaper, blu-ray may lose its current advantage.

What do the rest of you think about the probability of this happening?

I really hope blu-ray does win, and I thought it would after the blockbuster announcement. I just laid out $500 for the ps3 so I definitely do not want that to go to waste.

Please state your thoughts and opinions...

What scam aspects?

Sony never claimed it was a pricedrop, just a "temporary price reduction", all the newspaper ads were running as "save $100".

It's very common to drop the price to clear out electronics that are being discontinued, as the 60GB is.

Blu will win because it's backed by the entire industry, and outselling the competition almost 3-1. No amount of firesaleing is going to undo that and the PS3 advantage at this point

It has been stated many times before, that it all comes down to support and content. Even though HD-DUD may be cheaper, obviously that is not working. They don't have the content nor the support to keep it afloat and it will eventually die.

I'm sure many here would agree with me, HD-DVD will lose & Blu-ray will win. The stats so far have yet to prove us wrong.

And this "scam" you speak of regarding the price drop is not a scam nor a fire-sale. There have been many articles running on this topic saying that Sony is trying to deplete it's stock of 60 GB PS3 models in order to introduce the new 80 GB PS3 model in the fall bundled with a game for $599 US.

I for one do not think that Sony should raise the price back up to $599 US, no matter what they bundle with it.

Sound a bit paranoid? The winning is in the content and BD has that in Spades!

HD-DVD have had cheaper player for the entire year but it haven't helped them. The PS3 is becoming cheaper. You have both the PS3 60GB for $100 cheaper than before and the new PS3 for $599 will come with bigger HD and Motorstorm.

Default I think Blu will beat HD-DVD hands down

Even though HD-DVD does have a cheaper price for its players but it doesnt play video games like the PS3 does and for gamers thats a no to HD-DVD to gamers since they cant play video games on the HD-DVD so really you are spending more money if you get an XBOX 360 and an HD-DVD player for those of you who want the lame HD-DVD's which by next year i think blu-ray would become a household name not hd-dvd. Well i dont care just as long as Blu-ray wins i am happy.

I really don't think this is something to worry about, so far the sales for BD says enough about what consumers want. I think it will make a larger statement during the holidays (HD DUD HAS NO CHANCE AT ALL.). Think about it this way, studio support alone will lead people to the right direction. HD DVD for example has Universal. Now universal has good movies, but compare to other great movies from sony, fox, and disney. Heck Disney alone will beat universal.

Agains i say this is nothing to worry about. (unless hddud decides to sell each player for .99c then maybe we should worry )

Well here in Asia-Pacific, with Sony launching their first stand-alone player (while rival Toshiba can't even bring out the HD-E10 here), it looks like Blu-ray has captured this region fair and square.

There is no format war here.............as there is only one HD-format available right now.......and that's Blu-ray

Plus the number of studios with blu-ray compaired to HD is like what 6 to 3 so your chances of more movies would be with the company with the most product you would think.

Blu ray may be clearly in lead, but HD sales in total are still very low. Even a butterfly flag could turn the situation. At the moment studios are backing Blu, if demand of HD-DVD rises some could rethink their strategy. The impact of 99$ Toshiba player offer mustn't be underestimated.

I do agree that money talks, but pending on the location you buy your movies at, because when I bought my Blu I noticed at the Best Buy I get alot of my movies from there mybe lets just say 15 - 20 titles for HD and 20-30 for Blu well if I spend $100 on something I want to beable to watch the movies I want, and if there are more for one than another you would normaly lean towards the one with more availability. correct me if I'm wrong.

With the article about Sony ceo or chairman saying HDDVD wont last much longer and toshiba possibly dropping down to $100....maybe Tosh is trying to get rid of their "beta" players.

They could just be trying to gain marketshare too.

I will give them kudos on the interactive menu system...makes me wonder why blu ray can't come up with something like HD-i. I think its kinda cool to watch a car accident in a movie, then have a progressive accident report with damages and cost pop up on the screen (Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift).

As far as Blu Ray losing....HA Its got industry support, It's cases are Blue not dark maroon, and It's cooler to say Blu Ray than a bunch of letters(H D D V D)

I would be stunned if HD-DVD hangs on for another year. For one wal-mart is going to carry the BDP-S300 for 488.00 plus 2 free movies and there will be the option of mailing in for 5 more movies. http://hollywoodinhidef.com/news_detail.php?id=68

IMHO the PS3's success has insured blu-ray's survival and ultimate victory.

Anything is possible, with 99% of the population undecided or uneducated, price could play a huge roll in this. Blu-ray has a lead and advantages, lets hope they keep it that way. I would hate for this to come down to the cheapest player.

price is nothing if you dont have support or content and price is the only real advantage HD-DVD has, beyond that blu will/has everything HD-DVD has but with superior spec.

Content is King, but Content and good prices are unbeatable, sadly neither side has both yet, but blu ray has the better chance of attaining that position as it already has the studios and CE support, price will come down as it always does.

It will all depend on studios staying exclusive or going neutral.

Price is everything if your not educated on the facts. If you saw two demos in Bestbuy of the same movie, and not know about studio support, your going to save $200.00 thinking you got a deal on the HD-DVD player.

Hopefully people do their homework before a purchase.

This is absolutely correct! Believe me, I would LOVE for Blu-Ray to win, but this war is all but over. It WILL come down to the tons of people that actually shop at Walmart or Target. If they start selling the HD-DVD player for $199 or even $99, then Billy Bob and his cousin John Bob will go out and buy themselves a mighty fine 'next generation machine'. They have no clue and are certainly not educated on what the difference between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is. They just can afford something that to them seems to be great, and they will purchase some HD-DVD movies with the player. And there is enough HD-DVD titles out there for now, to start a nice collection. All the studios that currently support only Blu-Ray, will eventually have to go neutral or switch over to HD-DVD if they don't want to lose sales.
An other example for this is the $100 'price drop' for the PS3. To me it makes no difference, I bought the PS3 when it came out, because I knew what it is capable of and what I wanted/needed. But now people buy it because it is 'cheaper' and not because they really wanted a PS3 or because of its features.
It all comes down to the money that manufactures and studios can make on this. Lets just hope that the Blu-Ray supporting manufacturers will care enough about the format and not just the money. And furthermore that they will sell the BD player cheaper than the HD-DVD player soon. That way even Billy Bob (who never did his homework) will get a deal on a mighty fine Blu-Ray player.

Cheers and Blu-Ray forever...

i dont think J6P is quite as thick as you make out though.
