Default PS3 Slim Bitstream Issue

Hi, I recently switched from the "fat" PS3 to the slim one. In doing so I have set the audio to bitstream as I have the PS3 hooked up via HDMI to my Pioneer 1019 capable of decoding DTS HD and Dolby True. I have noticed the sound bitstreamed compared to PCM to be quieter with less oomph. I was expecting this to be the other way around. I tested this with several discs including the Band Of Brothers Blu Box. In the middle of a scene I will switch from bitstream to PCM and without a doubt hear a difference. Has anyone else experienced this with Bitstreaming compared to PCM? I have no problem resorting back to PCM but I will sure miss the lights on the Pioneer. Could this also be just the way my AVR decodes? I'm perplexed.

It probably has to do with the soundfield that your receiver applies to the codec. You'll need to pull out your manual and play with it to figure out which sounds best to you.

Turn the volume up when on bitstream. Problem solved.

Seriously though, if the volume is the same and it still has less "oomph," just use the internal decoding.

When using PCM, and I may be wrong here, the Dialog Normalization is not applied to the sound output to the receiver. When bitstreaming, Dialog normalization IS applied to the sound, which can make it sound quieter. Turning up the volume to compensate is what is necessary.

I think what is being said is that dial norm isn't applied when the track that is supplied on the disc is LPCM, as opposed to True HD, HDMA, DD or DTS (unless I misread). If the player does the decoding, it should apply just like if the receiver is doing the decoding.

I guess then this would explain why every time I switch from PCM to Bitstream I get a Dial Norm +4 message on the Pioneer.

There is a thread on AVS forum about the audio on the PS3 slim. I don't know if it is similar but the OP requested feedback and wanted to know what AVR one was using.
