HOLY CRAP! Well I guess the answer to the question of whether or not the PS3 would output 1080i or 1080p is NEITHER! It goes on to say that not only will Blu-rays be downgraded, but SO WILL GAMES, sometimes not even to HD! http://hdguru3d.com/index.php?option...news&Itemid=59 Strange that they say the cell isn't powerful enough to do it, yet a fricken' Samsung TV can? Do you think they handicapped it on purpose to sell more 3DBD players? It's just shocking that this was not revealed earlier, especially when demoing it at CES! I'm sure the upgrade will be in an automatic update, but you don't have to use 3D if you don't want.
Also, it obviously wasn't done on purpose. Any limitations it may have would be from hardware. I doubt they were looking years into the future about 3D blu-ray and the ps3's possible limitations. |

I would be more upset at this had the FAT PS3's actually come with the dual HDMI ouputs as they were intended (one to 3D TV and one to an HDMI 1.3 receiver for uncompressed audio). For me 3D acceptance is a long way off due to needing new equipment besides the player.

This article only makes reference to the PS3's 3D gaming capabilities. Nowhere is BD3D mentioned. I would expect 1080i is still more than likely for BD3D output as early tests for PiP on the PS3 allowed for the simultaneous decoding of two 1080p streams, and that was a couple of years ago. Rendering game graphics for 3D is another thing entirely.

So 1080p is definitely out. Is it still POSSIBLE that it could do 1080i for Blu-ray 3D? If so, I would think their PR people would have made that ABUNDANTLY clear in this statement. And I frankly still don't believe that a fricken' Samsung TV has more processing power than a cell chip. Last edited by fettastic; 04-27-2010 at 08:41 PM. |

Nope.
"For games such as WipeOut the resolution was scaled down from 1080p to 720p, however with native 720p games such as MotorStorm the 3D versions were scaled down to 480p standard definition graphics, to enable the 3D effect." |

Nothing to do with the power...the HDMI chipset in the PS3 isn't capable of 1080p120 which is why you cannot do 1080p60 3D games.
The SiI9132 chipset used in the PS3 has a maximum bandwidth of 6.75 Gbps [ref], which is not enough for 1080p120, but is enough for 1080p60, 1080p24 and 1080p48. So I'm not sure why full 1080p 3D from Blu-ray would be a problem from a bandwidth standpoint for sets that can accept 1080p48 and I certainly can't see how it would be a problem from a computational standpoint given that the PS3 is capable of decoding 2 1080p24 AVC/MPEG-4 streams at the same time already. I guess if all 3D TV's require a 1080p120 input then that would explain it, but seems weird that they wouldn't want to allow for a judder-free input which 1080p120 ain't. I fail to see where it says Blu-ray...
Also, only current games will be downgraded as the game engines are already being pushed at their current settings. It says nothing about future games being limited to 720p. Common sense says yes, but SCE first party have defied common sense on plenty of occasions. The article is also about 2 months late on this news and there have been hands on post-GDC which have been better for 3D than the ones at GDC. |

Existing games that are being patched for stereoscopic 3D are being downgraded to output the dual streams.
However, new games built from the groundup by developers with stereoscopic 3D in mind will not need to be downgraded. |
