Question Stereoscopic 3D: Super Stardust HD leading the pack (version 5.00 released!)

Super Stardust 3D: 720p120 confirmed
January 11th, 2010
Quote:
Thanks to an assist from SCEE, Digital Foundry had the chance to pose a few questions to the Housemarque Super Stardust HD tech team: engine lead Seppo Halonen and creative director Harri Tikkanen.

The answers are hugely enlightening, revealing that Sony's stereoscopic 3D system is indeed based on the notion of full 720p resolution, unlike the current 3D games released to date. This is hugely significant, confirming that the new version of Super Stardust HD is effectively running at a native resolution of full 720p at a staggering 120 frames per second (60 for each eye). We're talking about something not just based on low-resolution buffers as in Invincible Tiger and Avatar, but something new, exciting and a whole lot more challenging to achieve: a true technical leap, and a definite unique selling point for the Sony platform.

anti-aliasing. Also the split screen co-op runs now 60fps.

Best regards,

1080 output: was 1280x1080 now 1920x1080

720 output: was 1280x720 (supersampled from 1280x1080) now native 1280x720 4xMSAA

splitscreen: 30fps upgraded to 60fps

Neat! So this is a new version of SSHD? Will I need 3D glasses to play it?

There's an animated demonstration of how the frames are separated for each eye by active shutter glasses here: http://www.sony.net/united/3D/?j-sho...chnorogy/3dtv/

Thats so stupid if it's true. I hear there might be an adapter so you don't need to buy a 3D tv. If I really have to buy a new tv. I won't be interested in 3D for awhile...Other then that. The game sounds awesome...

Haven't heard of an adapter. The TV needs to be able to do true 120Hz in order for this to work as far as I know. Plus something to keep the glasses and TV synched.

I think I just read earlier tonight that Mitsubishi would be selling an adapter for their "3D ready" TVs. I can't seem to find the link now but it's probably something that got merged into the 3D thread.

I doubt a heavy 720p game like LBP is rendering 720p60 for 3D so it'll be interesting to see what alternative methods PS3 dedicated studios are using.

DigitalFoundry posted their PS3 3D preview

The conflicting impressions of Polyphony's implementation from various sources is interesting. If 3D gives depth to the driver's view similar to the pilots chair in Avatar (movie), I can't see how some would find the effect too subtle. Outside the car, if it really helps you judge breaking and gives a greater sense of speed without motion blur, field of view adjustment - woohoo!

Dropped AA and/or resolutions below 720p are something that should be avoided so I wouldn't fancy MotorStorm: Pacific Rift if DF's observations on that are correct. Framerate inconsistencies may be what causes the flickering in some games. Despite the timing communication (infra-red or bluetooth), I don't know if active shutter glasses can continuously change the shutter rate to match an inconsistent framerate yet.

update:

YouTube - MTBS-TV: HDMI reveals inner workings of Sony PlayStation 3 and Stereoscopic 3D at CES 2010!
Difficult interview to watch, but fairly interesting. Seems the HDMI chips in the PS3 are more flexible than I assumed; I didn't think they'd be able to pass what to them appears to be arbitrary data (the 3D formatting info). Of course, flexibility like that comes at a cost; it's amazing to see how much future-proofing went into even the launch model PS3s.

Default Viral Video Apparently Teases 3D PS3

Quote:
A viral video apparently plugging some new sort of Playstation technology surfaced over the weekend. Is it for 3D gaming (likely) or the Playstation 4 (seriously doubt it)?

The clip opens up with a night vision shoot of some sort of complex. The text reads S.C.E. Principal Scientific Research Laboratory, Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan. (Sony Computer Entertainment has offices in Minami-Aoyama.)
A woman answers the door and tells the guy with the camera to cooperate. They then race through the hallways of the structure, telling each other to hurry. They throw open a door, and the woman asks what the guy in the lab coat is doing.

In the next room, there is a guy on the floor. They take off his glasses and remove the controller from his hand. As they try to take the controller from his hands, the man on the ground begins squealing.
The video then cuts out to a title card that reads: "PS4 V3.1 - Please Wait A Moment".

The end appears to be related more with the PS3's 3D feature than with brand new hardware. As promotion for the PS3's 3D capabilities kick into high gear, obviously we could expect to see television ads promoting this feature. From the blurred glimpses in the commercial, the television in the clips seems as though it could be 3D.

The bit at the end that mentions "PS4 V3.1" could have been added in post production by someone besides the makers of this clip. It is possible.
This video has not been confirmed to be connected with Sony or the PlayStation. It is slick and professional, yes, but is it from Sony? And what parts of it are from Sony? Kotaku is following up.
