Default PS3/Onkyo 805 audio settings

I have my PS3 (primary blu-ray player) hooked up to an Onkyo 805 via HDMI and then via HDMI to my Sony 55" A2000.

For some reason, I cannot get my system to output 7.1. All the speaker are hooked up and both units appear to be configured properly. Any advice?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Is your PS3 set up to output the audio via PCM or bitstream in the HDMI setting on the PS3?

I too have this receiver, granted I dont have the 2 speakers to complete 7.1 nor the room but I have mine set to PCM. Is this what it should be set to?

Hey,
not to hijack your thread Bear, but i think we might have the same problem

I purchased a display model 805 a couple weeks ago from circuit city. I couldn't get anything but the front speakers to work. When i would change to surround, only the front speakers would work and you'd lose dialog from the center, etc.

In stereo mode they sound great, but the fact remains i couldn't get surround sound no matter what. I also tried different sources (xbox + ps3 + cablebox). All sources were hooked up with optical audio cables.

Despite hours of searching I couldn't find what the problem was, so i assumed it was a defective unit and returned it. Does this sound familiar to you or anybody reading this?

First off your problem was using an Optical cable. You can only get 2.0 (stereo) through optical cable when set to PCM. (for 5.1 dolby digital and DTS you need to set the PS3 to bitstream)

You could be right but i played around with tons of settings, including the PS3 audio ones for PCM/bitstream. Didn't seem to make it any different.

I wasn't aware optical had limitations like that. thought it was a good solution for audio?

good? yes.

...the best? no. Optical cannot provide high definition content protection (HDCP) which is why its limited to 2 channel PCM. (standard dolby digital and dts are not copy protected this way and is also very compressed which is why an optical cable can carry the 5.1 signal...but if you want uncompressed PCM, dolby truehd and dts-hd master, you need an HDMI connection...or analog but thats a whole nother explanation )

Thanks for clearing it up, never been clear on the issue.

I wonder if this solves my problem, along with the original poster.

I'm using Linear PCM and have an HDMI hookup so it's a little different issue than yours, TheOmegaSoldier. I have tried everything I know to do and cannot enable the back surround speakers to save my life.

do you have the surround rear chennels set to "on" or "auto" in the reciever?

and 7.1 checked on the PS3 PCM output (you mayb have to do "maunual" selecting, I have heard the ps3 recognize the onkyos as 5.1)?

Yes, I sure do and have done a manual setting. Maybe, I'll just reset everthing to factory specs and start over. I'm probably missing something simple. Thanks.

If the movie isn't a 7.1 movie, you wont get 7.1. 95% are 5.1.

The only way to get 7.1 from these 5.1 movies is to add prologic 2 over it, if the receiver allows it.

Have you tried your Receiver's "test tone"? Does it play sound out of all 7 speakers?
