Default why SEQUEL are made?

Hi, friend i like to place a topic or a question. Why the filmmaker makes sequel? When most of the time it has seen that the sequel are far from satisfactory than expected. What is the reason behind this? I want your opinion.

Hollywood is all about one thing in the end...the almighty dollar. To that end yes, a lot of unnecessary sequels are made, it'll probably always be that way.

Personally, I love sequels where the content deserves it. Some of my favourite franchises have been enriched thanks to the continuation of the stories.

Back To The Future
The Godfather
The Matrix
Pirates Of The Caribbean
X-Men
(the first 2 anyhow)

...among others would not have been as good FOR ME had they been solo ventures.

I blame the big bucks for the reason.

I also think sometimes it has something to do with continuing the story depending on the story being told. (rarely unless it is attached to a book or a comic).

As others have already stated, it comes down to money. Petra makes a good point about some movies being enriched by sequels - I would add Empire Strikes Back and Aliens to the list.

I will also say the same for Bourne and Indiana Jones.

If it weren't for Greedy Hollywood, we wouldn't have such instant classics like Garfield 2 and the 2nd Charlie's Angels movie. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

In terms of real sequels that are not made as part of a conituing story like eg Stawars and Godfather. I think the only really good sequel is Terminator 2

I would agree with this. I hate most sequels. Well, hate is a strong word, but I dislike them usually.

Yep, it's usually for the money (like "Transformers 2;" poorly-received, but made a whopping half-a-billion dollars worldwide). If one movie does really well, then surely a second one will do just as good, if not better. Sometimes, it's like Hollywood expects lightning to strike twice!

Now and then, there might be an artistic incentive though (like when a director really wants to make a sequel and continue a story; Christopher Nolan came back to make "The Dark Knight," James Cameron made "Terminator 2" after ten years, the one guy made his "Boondock Saints" sequel, etc.).

There are a lot of bad (and sometimes really REALLY bad) sequels, but I think there's a lot of good ones too. It depends on the quality of the given franchise.
