Broke down and bought a Pioneer 1019 today because Best Buy had an open box for a great price - $400. Went home, read the manuel, hooked it up, ran the MCACC, and sat down for a listen to Hellboy II and Sniff-n-the Tears' "Drivers Seat" and Monster Magnet's "Silver Future." All three of these sources represent a bit of my taste and a true torture test for my system.
The Pioneer 1019??? FAIL. I do not claim to be any audiophile, but I like my music and movies and have since the purchase of my first system in 1980. Like most of you, I've listened to countless other systems over the years, and I know what I like in the price range I can afford. The Pioneer 1019 aint it. Compared to my nine-year-old Yamaha HTR5450, the Pioneer sounds thin, harsh, and lacking in substance. Sure, it gets loud, but I got a headache after only a few minutes of it turned up to what the display said was "0db". The same sound level with my old Yamaha rocks my world, and I can spend hours listening to it. The HTR5450 sounds much fuller, richer, and with a substance that fills the room but doesn't drive me away. Tomorrow the Pioneer goes back to Best Buy. I've been wanting a new receiver for the full HDMI and benefit of all the new advances that have been made in the last nine years, but sound quality still counts and, in my opinion, the Pioneer 1019 doesn't have it. P.S. At indicated "0db" while playing music, the 1019 repeatedly shut down and reset itself like maybe it was overtaxed? Never had a receiver do this before in my life. Maybe there is something to be said for the physical weight of a receiver - the 1019 is light, light, light compared to my 5450. Lastly, I've really been wanting the Marantz SR6003 but thought I'd give the 1019 a try because of the cheap deal and relatively good reviews I'd read on the boards and at Cnet. Can anyone here with Marantz SR6003 experience tell me if this is the way to go? Will it power my system and not sound like a banshee screaming in my ear? http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/recei...er-review.html I would go for it. It also allows for future upgrade, as far as power is concerned, with its preouts. Last edited by JasonR; 06-28-2009 at 06:20 AM. |

What you are describing is what I was afraid of with the new Non-elite Pioneer recievers, YES, that receiver is LIGHT, actually almost 10 pounds lighter then last years 1018, 28 v 19.... I am afraid that the new Yamahas may have the same issue, the 663 32 lbs and now the 665 23 lbs. It seems that reciever mfgs this year went with features and left behind performance.
I would think that the Marantz would be a great reciever, I want to get the 5003 myself, I would suggest finding a place to listen to it so you dont have the same issue. |

You are right. I never meant to trash someone's choice in receiver, and the Pioneer does get more good reviews than bad. The sound just isn't for me.
My HTR54050 is hooked back up and sounds wonderful as I write this post. I'm happy with it. The Pioneer is boxed and waiting for Best Buy to open for it's return. The Marantz is on sale at One Call, but now I'm kinda shy about fixing what aint broke. We'll see... Cheers. |

I would say that if it's shutting down, you're pushing it too hard. It may not have been true reference volume since you didn't calibrate it. Not sure what your Kef speakers are rated or the Ohm rating on them, but sounds like it was a bad combination.

I have owned the 1019 for a little over a month now and LOVE mine. I bought it to replace my Marantz SR5002 and am in love with the Pioneer. Sound wise, I personally believe that it sounds better than the Marantz...but obviously you don't feel the same way.

This is my first audio/video receiver. I have been using a Sony HTIB for the past 10 years so this is a welcome upgrade. I have had the 1019 for around 2 months and I love it as well. It has been pushing sound to my Def Tech system which includes the 1000 center, SM350s, and ProMon 800s. By August I will have 2 BP 1.2x speakers and an SVS sub hooked up to finish my 7.1 and then we shall see if it is still enough. I have a feeling it will be just fine. If I had to complain about anything it is that occasionally either audio or video won't pass from my xbox 360 to the tv. Put all I will have to do to toggle the input again and it works no problem. Anyone else having this issue with any receiver? I give it a 9/10.
