Were they just preparing us for the hd to hit?

I was on youtube and there was a guy who said they were just getting us use to DVD so we would be prepared for the hd dvds when they hit the market. The idea he thinks was getting use to have movies on disc to prepare for blu-ray down the line. If they were planning this the be the main discs to produce does that mean dvd is going to phase out and it is just going to be more and more blu-rays coming in the future?
