Default Explaining 3D Displays to "People"

A friend of mine came to check out the 3D Demo at Best Buy. The sales person was explaining how he needs the 3D TV, 3D Blu-ray player and 3D versions of the movies.

My friend came to me after Best Buy and asked me questions about them. Now I'm not the biggest "Know It All" kind of guy but I knew some stuff.

I told him that "yes" you would need the 3DTV or 3D ready TV but you won't need anything else. He was told that the PS3 won't be compatible and would need to go with the Samsung 3D Blu-ray player. I told him that the PS3 is upgradeable and is 3D ready just wait for the firmware update. Last thing the sales person said was that he would need 3D version of the film for it to work properly and asked me if it was true, I said that any movies out now can be in 3D as long as you have the 3D enabled player and TV, you don't need a 3D version of the film. He then said that sales person told that none of the movies now will play in 3D and future releases will be. I then told him that it was all BS.

There has to be an easier explanation to these things. >.<

I work and retail and the whole business is to upsell, but i don't do that I would usually tell people to do some homework if they don't feel too confident about the words that i was told. Geezzz...if retails are gonna sell these things atleast tell the people the truth or train these people.

From all that I understand:

You need the 3D ready TV, player and if you run every thing through a receiver that also has to be 3D ready. There is only one film out that has the new 3D and that is the carton that is being used to demo 3D.

I am not an expert on the PS3 but I am pretty sure that will be upgradeable in a very short time and I sure hope my Martantz BD8002 will be upgradeable in the near future.

The Best Buy employee was wrong about the PS3. It'll be upgraded to 3D around July (rumored month).

You were wrong about the movies. Unless his TV has a 3D post processing feature (like that 103" HDI set), he needs to purchase BD discs encoded with an over-under FHD3D stream.

The receiver must be 3D ready because current hdmi 1.3 wont recognise the FHD3D flag and refuse to pass the signal (though they have more than the required throughput) to the TV.

So you need a 3D TV, a 3D upgradeable BD player (like the PS3), a 3D ready receiver, and BD discs with 3D data.

You can get away with out the receiver if you run an HDMI cable direct to the TV and run a multi-channel system through the receiver for sound.

Data on the disc, read by the player and the TV and all that works along with the new technology working through the glasses. The glasses actually do something not like the old red and blue glasses from years past.

I would say both you and the person at Best Buy are right.
The PS3 will get an upgrade but nobody knows if it will be able to do a full 3D as it were. We will really not know until the FW is out and has been tested. In order to guarentee the full 3D, meaning resolution and refresh rate, you need one of the new 3d blu-ray players.

As to not needing a receiver hooking up straight to the TV and running audio only to the receiver is a receipe to have things mistimed. Yes it can work but it is far from ideal.

You will not need a new receiver if you buy a 3D BD player with dual HDMI inputs which panasonic has coming out.

Also if you buy a Samsung TV you must by Samsung Shutter Glasses. Same goes for any other TV out there. Samsung Glasses will not work with Sony TV and etc.

Did you mean dual HDMI out puts?? I would love to pick up a 3D Blu with 2 HDMI out puts, one to run direct to the 3D TV and the other for sound through my non 3D receiver. That would mean I would keep my Marantz player and receiver for Blus and DVDs and switch over to watch a 3Ds through the 3D player.

I stopped by BB to day to see the Panasonic and took a look at the 3D player.
This is great. Two outputs, one 1.4 HDMI to run video to the 3D TV and a 1.3 HDMI to run audio to a non-3D receiver. Perfect!!

never thought about the receiver before. I must say I think it is totally petarded that you have to upgrade the receiver to pass through a 3D image.

Dumb dumb dumb.

As I've been saying, this is all so new, I bet in the next couple years, that won't be true anymore. Not sure how they would find a work-around, but they will....they will.

They already have: by adding 2 HDMI outputs behind the player. One for the 3D TV and the other for the non-3D receiver.
