Talking Idioms that I don't quite understand.

For example, "this movie is hands down the best of 2009".

I know it means that it means "unquestionably the best of 2009", but why take your "hands down"?

Post some idioms you don't quite get why they're phrased like that, but know what they mean if you like.

I'm pretty sure "hands down" comes from when people in a hall would vote on something and ask all those opposed to raise their hands and say no. So hands down means unanimously yes.

edit: hmm never mind, found this with a little searching:

http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/win-hands-down.html

I know there's some other idiom that comes from voting and saying yea or nay but I can't remember it right now.

That kind of makes sense, or not really... when one person says hands down and that would somehow account for everybodys opinion.

What if we said Hands up instead?.

Does that mean this is the worst of the 2009.

So I never really understood why people said:
Top o' the mornin to ya

BUT, the other day my dad said back:
And the rest of the day to you

And it all made perfect sense!
