Default Help me understand

This quote was taken from the poll whether to switch from truehd to dts-ma. can someone explain what this statement means because i had the idea that ps3 did play those audio codecs...

"The PS3 decodes both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA, but can't bitstream any of them over HDMI to an AV receiver for it to decode the audio."

There are two places that audio can be decoded -- in the BD player, or the reciever/pre/pro.

Since the PS3 is not HDMI 1.3 compliant, it cannot bitstream the HD ausio codec to an external device for decodeding. therefore, the PS3 needs to do it internally and then stream the decoded audio as LPCM to the reciever/pre/pro for amplification.

Does that help?

Your Sony STR-DG720 will not internally decode Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio, but it will accept LPCM through HDMI. This is where you've got some serious luck.

Your PS3 can do the decoding of both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and if you set your PS3's HDMI audio setting to PCM, it will decode both formats and send them as LPCM to your receiver for playback.

To be sure, your PS3 may need a firmware update to decode DTS-HD Master Audio. Older PS3 units did not originally ship with this ability, and it became available only with a firmware date.

If your Sony receiver is showing or "PCM" for audio when playing Blu-ray discs, then you should be getting the lossless multichannel sound.
