Default AV Review Article: HD-DVD is the Standard & it's here to stay...

Toshiba HD-DVD
By Ducan Madden

Toshiba HD-DVD player

Unsurprisingly, the prize for most talked about technology at this year's IFA technology show in Berlin was the HD-DVD versus Blu-ray debate.

After recent mini victories for both formats, the HD-DVD group stepped forth via the Toshiba press conference and presented a raft of speakers determined to convince us of the benefits of red over blue (with a none too subtle but brilliantly placed clip of Neo from the first Matrix picking the red pill over the blue to see exactly 'how deep the rabbit hole goes').

Currently claiming an impressive 70 per cent of the standalone next-gen player market (thus notably not including PS3 sales), HD-DVD is making further inroads into Blu-ray's supposed dominance. In last week's HD-DVD conference at IFA, Toshiba presented its expectations and plans for the future survival and success of its format.

With Paramount and DreamWorks now on board, over 70 new titles are to be launched before the end of the year including the likes of the Bourne Trilogy, Harry Potter films and Blade Runner, taking the total to 400 titles, while on the hardware front a Ventura branded HD-DVD player, the SHD-7000, will go on the market at a dramatically reduced price - under €300.

With two other major new HD-DVD players released by Tosh at the same show (see our IFA report), the message is loud and clear - to quote Toshiba direct 'HD-DVD is a standard' and it's here to stay.

I guess the writer of the article forgot to attend the Blu-Ray press conference the day before. Wow, 3 HD-DVD players were shown, and how many were shown for blu-ray?

Well if those facts aren't slanted!!!

Why are some of these articles worded in such a way as to imply that WB releases like Harry Potter & Blade Runner are HDDVD exclusives? I know they aren't saying that, but the wording of this, and at least one other recent article, are very tricky.

I think what he meant to say was that hd dvd was standard. as in unimpressive, boring, old news.

venturer players = CE's version of the yugo

as someone else stated even walmart won't carry that crap. they still have flip top dvd players by durabrand, and they won't carry hd dvd players. come on.

This is also a UK mag. Doesn't HD-DVD have a pretty good head start over Blu-ray there?

Yeah, and when Blu ends up winning, we need to go back and make a fan vid with the later scene in the film when Cypher says to Neo "I know what you're thinking, 'cause it's what I've been thinking since this whole thing started. Why, oh why, didn't I take the BLU pill??!?!" LMAO

The subject line of this article is very misleading --

The author of the article is not claiming that HD-DVD is the standard, he's simply quoting Toshiba directly.

There's a world of difference between saying, "according to Toshiba HD-DVD is the standard and its here to stay" and the author stating that as his editorial opinion.

The subject line should read "Toshiba: HD-DVD is the standard..."

Between stuff like this and the infusion of Enderle nonsense...we clearly have hit a new leg on the propoganda campaign here.

Some people just don't get it. Probably another paid spokesman. Toshiba is just down right dirty. I don't trust them.

if this type of propoganda goes on, many people will start to believe they are the truth.
like my friend, who say he read from the net and totally convinced that Disney and all Blu exclusive studios and partners are going to ditch blu and join hd.

maybe we should also start doing blogs and news sites to report all these fug 'news' in reverse.

And the propaganda continues!
I HATE hearing the term "standalone players". Why are they so scared to add PS3 sales? They can even add 360 hddud addon sales.

This is like saying the amount of passenger cars on the road during a traffic jam without taking into consideration trucks and commercial vehicles. They are all on the same road!

HD-DVD is the standard of HDM in the same way the cubit is the standard of measurement.

That's similar to the FUD they were saying about the RCA CED Videodisc format years ago over the LaserDisc.

Anyone even remember this format, now?

Every time there is some garbage like this and the inevitable bilge water that will continue from Enderle, Blu needs to push the press to report the facts each and every time. Surely there is someone out there who can shine the light for those who are on the fence.

oh man I almost died laughing...this is a great continuation from last week's WEAK statements by HDDVD camp...the whole "we sell more HDDVD equipped laptops...hmmm...we look better in red....we are not lame like most people say we are....we are better than DVD....and we are putting out even TWO MORE TOSHIBA players that arent any that different from the other 3 we have out there, we just wannna flood the market since we have an overflow of blulasers and system boards....we got Paramount/Dreamworks exceot for anything by Spieldberg/Coppola/Ridleyscott...and hmmm..what else....yeah...Microsoft is oour *****!...we are cool aight??? """

hehehehehe! let see

Compare the BDA members to the HDDVD members by looking at all the participating names at the bottom of each site listed below

HDDVD @ http://www.TheLookandSoundofPerfect.com

BLURAY @ http://www.Bluray-Disc.com

HDDVD has Toshiba and Microsoft, while BLURAY has EVERYONE ELSE LEFT IN THE HARDWARE/SOFTWARE LEAGUE!!!
