DTS-HD MA, Profile 1.1, DLNA, AVCHD!!! wow, unbelievably, why Sony does such a thing! We only get 1.0 Player without DTS-HD MA!!!

These recorders are better Blu-ray players as the S500 and S2000ES!

Probably because they can't market that product in the States with a reasonable pricetag at the moment.

I don't know how it works over in Japan but in the US the digital transmissions are kind of in a messy state for a product like that. Cable and satellite companies have tied their services to their own HD DVR boxes. The only option is to use CableCards but they have reduced functionality and very spotty support from cable\satellite companies since they don't really want to support them. That leaves the over-the-air digital transmissions which doesn't offer as many shows\movies and less coverage and require more know-how in setting up.

I looked into the HD Tivo but the CableCard mess with my cable company just turned me sour to that idea.

So, I don't know how a product like that would work here in the US. I'm curious though so if you have some info, please share.

I don't think those BD recorders can decode DTS-HD MA. Just bitstream out.

I hope they get around to making an entry level BD player to help convince people BD is the way to go. These players are all fantastic but they need to do something about an entry level player in the $280 - $300 mark.

Probably correct. According to the Japanese press release, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA can be outputed via HDMI. It says nothing about decoding them.

Oh yeah? Well Toshiba has an SED tv coming out that has that kind of contrast and.... Wait. Toshiba was sued by a Texas company that owned the patent on SEDs so they won't have any at all.

They are capable of both according to Engadget.

Do you have a source for the claim that they can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA? I could neither find it in the Impress article nor in Sony's press release. I would not trust Engadget on this...

Wow! That X90 is really something. I MUST have one!

Are there any US importers that would carry it?

I would try the normal places like ebay first.

DVD would be locked to region two, which could be a problem if you are in the US.

Four problems that makes it impractical to use in the US:

1. DVD playback is locked to region 2
2. The digital tuners use Japan's unique ISDB system which is different (and therefore incompatible) with the US ATSC system
3. while analog TV in Japan is the same NTSC used in the US, the actual broadcast frequencies are different. You could still be able to receive analog channels but the channel numbers will be quite off/different
4. Incompatible Conditional Access System, uses Japan's B-CAS system which is similar (but not compatible) with Cable Card used in the US

You'd be better off waiting for Sony to launch a US version, but that's unlikely as they've said they don't see a market for these recorders in North America

According to PC World, with the advent of these recorders Sony is ditching DVD recorders.

Quote:
Sony Corp. is increasing its bet on Blu-ray Disc and plans to ditch DVD and use the high-definition video disc format in all future digital video recorders in Japan, the company said Wednesday.

The announcement was made at the same time as Sony, the biggest backer of the technology, unveiled four new Blu-ray Disc video recorders. They include support for dual-layer discs -- something that was missing from models announced this time last year -- and can transcode video into the more efficient MPEG4 AVC format to increase recording time per disc.

Sounds interesting, but it is probably just for Japan.

It would be suicidal for Sony to give up the only profitable part of DVD revenue in the US and Europe.

These player/recorders support both Blu-Ray record and playback as well as DVD+-R/RW and DL, so it appears that although Sony is stating they want to get away from regular DVD, regular DVD will be here for years to come and they know it.
