Default Whats the best audio setting for the PS3

Hi, can anyone help? was wondering whats the best audio setting is for the ps3 to get the most out of my blu-rays? My ps3 is hooked up to my Sony STR-KS 1100 av receiver with the optical cable at the moment but have just bought a new hdmi 1.3 cable to connect the ps3 to the receiver with that.

Also whats the difference between DD DTS 5.1 and the PCM audio setting?

Any help will be great.

Default The difference

I would say PCM is the best. The real question is will your home theater process HDMI based sound output. Most sub $500 dollar units will only switch hdmi, and leave sound to the optical connection, which can't support PCM or the Dolby Digital and DTS Master formats(but still does the DD and DTS regular). HDMI sound processing by the receiver is the key.

DD and DTS are codecs that compress sound into a manageable file size for formats like HDDVD which has space constraints. Uncompressed PCM sound is essentially the audio that the studio produces as the master for the film. It is not compressed or degraded. It's like listening to a 5.1 channel CD vs. a 5.1 channel Mp3. Though they sound about the same, you know one is better for sound quality. All I know is, I was watching the Fifth Element with PCM and the opera scene was especially good. It is not necessary to enjoy the movie, but it's nice to have.

When you take a home movie off your mini dv camera and put it on a DVD, more often than not your sound is PCM(stands for Pulse Code Modulation btw). DD and DTS are used to shrink the sound file size down to allow for more video bandwidth. A HDDVD can output PCM, but it would reduce video bandwidth potentially resulting in picture quality loss. I have seen one anime movie advertised on HDDVD with alleged PCM sound. Right now a lot of blu-ray movies are PCM 5.1, but 7.1 is possible. It's like a little bonus you get for going with blu-ray.

Your receiver is really part of a HTiB - a UK model, obviously. From reading the manual, it appears that it won't do multichannel PCM via HDMI. I could be wrong. Try it out first.
