Highly enjoyable satire in the vein of Coburn's Flint films and obviously an influence on Austin Powers. Bright, colourful and fun, it would make an excellent blu ray. The DVD restored the songs edited out of the TV versions for copyright but deleted scenes exist, notably one in an arthouse cinema.

I just revisited this classic biting satire that plays like the Flint films on steroids. This is a title that practically screams for boutique label treatment with extras so it can be rediscovered. It’s absolutely nuts that this has stayed unheralded for so long.
This is one of those cinematic buried gems you can’t believe got made but it did. Part spy spoof, part biting societal satire and some elements that are extremely prescient. It’s also howlingly hysterical throughout and so intelligently put together that it is one of the best films of that year which for 1967 is really saying something. Coburn is magnificent in the lead role and every supporting actor shines. It’s popped up on criterion channel before so it could somehow be a Criterion future release. Someone needs to do it. There’s several deleted scenes floating around and the dvd is absolutely bare bones. If a cross between Our Man Flint and Dr. Strangelove placed right in the late 60’s is a thought that grabs you-see this picture immediately! |

Oh yes! A big favourite of mine (I'm hanging on to the Paramount DVD). A really sharp (& funny) satire, & Coburn is just so cool. And there's a great bit near the start from Godfrey Cambridge about hearing the N word when he was young, powerful stuff, & in a bit of a madcap comedy. This film is a gem, & I hope it's not too long before it shows up on Blu-ray.
