I think i have to disagree with you there P-Man, the french are incredibly backwards when it comes to modernisation in everything from politics and economics to science and technology. Always stuck in the past, look at the EU the most wasteful organisation ever created all because the french are always perpetual victims.

They have the fastest train in the world and their electricty is almost 80% nuclear power. Hardly the sign of a backward thinking country. There has always been a power struggle in Europe between Great Britain, France and Germany. Its moved on from wars to politics.

Why the politics? There are great arguments for and against the EU. The Euro as revolutionized currency in Europe and levelled the playing field amoungst EU nations, yet England does not believe in the Euro. (I believe in Gyros, but that is neither here nor there) The goal of the EU, stated or unstated, since the ECSC (European Coal and Steel Community) has been to force political and diplomatic agreements between countries by linking their finacial well beings to one another. Just my opinion, I may be wrong. But no more global politics.

Hey Maxpower how are Spurs doing this year...I am more than pleased with everything at Ashburton Grove.

With the amount of GDP funneled into taxes and what they expect the state to do, I'd be a little dissapointed if the trains didn't go at a decent speed.

And I have to disagree with you too, Maxpower

I'm not French but I've been living in France for a number of years. And although this country may lag in a few areas, things are never black or white and the truth always lies in the middle.

For the drawbacks you see on the news, there are also a number of great achievements and the little things you see in your daily life. Like the political crusades to sell condoms almost free of charge to fight AIDS, drive hi-speed Internet access even in the small rural areas, or providing support to people with little income. And can you imagine the cinema without Cannes?

Another great thing of France is wealth of diversity in entertainment. I can walk one mile and find shops with a gigantic selection of Hong Kong, anime, Bollywood or western spaghetti flicks, I can buy region A BD before their street date in the US (paidgeek, you haven't heard it ), I can get all the imported mangas -- and if I don't speak Japanese, the city of Paris provides basic and advanced courses with quality teachers for barely 50 euros *per year*.

(note to Penton: when you come to Paris, be sure to try the Vélib -- every Hollywood star or singer seem to be using them when they're in town ).

Now, if you're really meaning football, I won't disagree I'm a Juve fan, and my country has won four times more World Cups than the French.
