It has a completely new SKU and significantly changed hardware though, so I don't see how it can be called the same product. As has been seen with the leaked FCC documents it still has to go through all the regular certifications before it can be sold to the public.

On the other hand, that Eklund fella did raise some eyebrows at this conference (which was not solely attended by movie freaks like some of us ) when he mentioned something to the effect that Blu-ray was just not a movie delivery system but had applications with camcorders and Blu-ray recorders.

Those folks in attendance seemed to like that in so much as they became attuned to the applications of Blu-ray beyond just movies on a disc.
(think dollar signs in some eyes)

I wish he would have also commented upon the close ties between AVCHD and Blu-ray.

Thanks

I do not expect it to ship with 1.1, but I do expect it to accept a firmware update to add it.

Hey Penton, should we read anything into the recent announcement of Warner being part of Blu-ray Partners France or is this a bit of wishful thinking on my part?

Yes, I expect it to support the 1.1 specification. The development we are doing with some test hardware is going well.

Can SPHE create those kinda instructions on screen to make it easy for new users to calibrate their HDTVs? I think if we can have this utility, it will greatly enhance users appreciation of your efforts.

Also, SPHE and others in the BDA might want to educate users about native 16x9 movies and 2.40:1 movies with an educational short using catalog titles already released on BD.

Thanks paidgeek. (puts RM40 angpow in paidgeek's coffer)

This is a very good suggestion and an area we have been neglecting a bit in favor of other projects. I'll see what we can get going...

Would it be feasible or legal for the BDA to offer some kind of trade in deal for people with HD-DVD players, just to get them over to our side?

"Send us your HD DVD player and we'll give you $200 off a new BD player."

We had talked about this once or twice, but I think the incentives offered for software (like the 5 free disc offer) makes more sense. What would we do with all those players anyway?

Couldn't you take the blue diodes out of them and recycle?

paidgeek - i have started to see more ads now saying "Blu-ray High Def" before and after the movie, which is great

Can we expect to see even more prominence for Blu-ray when the Spider-man 3 ads begin in earnest sometime after Transformers is released?

Will the announced New Line titles, i.e. Rush Hour 3, take advantage of 1.1 features?

Would be nice if Warner sprung an early New Year suprise with a 1.1 title.....................any!

The HD channel commercials will definitely be ratcheting up...

Well, a similar amnesty offer by The Right Stuff resulted in a nice bonfire..... How about a coral reef? It could make a nice contest for the Sony site anyway

paid,

any chance the PS3 will playback AVCHD video (m2ts / mts files) from external storagae in full 5.1 audio instead of downmixing tin stereo?

really frustrating to have a nice HD video cam that records 5.1 audio in AVCHD only to have the ps3 downmix to stereo.

thanks - i know this is kind of offtopic from Blu-Ray.

Any chance BD-Live will be included in that 1.1 update? The PS3 already has network connectivity.

Well The HD-DVD players would be garbage, but it would be gaining a new customer permanently from the dark side. Investment in the future... these new owners will in turn invest in movies for their new BD Player. I doubt something like this is really feasible, but IMO it would be very effective. Not only would Blu Ray be gaing a customer but HD-DVD would be losing one as well (kind of like divisional games in sports). The 5 free movies offer is awesome for new customers, but I dont think it goes too far in convincing HD owners to switch. I thought of this because my friend owns an HD player and instead of selling it and buying a BD Player, he is just gonna buy a new BD player and support both formats... when I told him my idea he said he would trade it in right away. Thanks for responding though, I didnt think anyone was gonna thouch this idea.

You've never seen the best movie ever made?!?!?

Send them all to Jodi’s house?
She can store them in her garage as heirlooms.

Don't get your hopes up, I emailed Warner and they said France still releases in both formats. Oh well, them joining the association could be a good omen, but at the very least, it will be another reason for them to stay neutral and not abandon us like Paramount.

Hey Rob,

I've never seen it either but I've heard it's like Hidalgo. If I liked that one, do you think I'd like LOA?
