Have any insiders had a chance to see how New Media Enterprises are presenting their HD VMD format and players?

ML622 and ML777 HD VMD players are the first high definition video players to output true 1080p. Utilizing the Sigma Designs EM8622L chip set these two players will output the native 1080p resolution from the disc rather than adding a second conversion process by breaking it down to 1080i and de-interlacing back to 1080p.

HD VMDs have a maximum data transfer rate of 40 Mbps versus 36 Mbps for HD DVD and Blu-ray, which gives it the potential of sharper more detailed pictures over the competing formats.

Mods note: Blu-ray's audio/video transfer rate is 48 Mb/s and the total bitrate is 54 Mb/s

Amir mentioned a couple of possibilities after the whole discussion came up and a lot of them involved finding points earlier in the stream where the bandwidth requirements were not significant and fork at that point carrying parallel streams. Or creating switch points in scenes where there was a lot of noise to hide any glitches. None of the solutions seemed anything more than lots of elbow grease and cost to say it was doable. Not sure what happens to the PQ, and AQ after the switch point as arn't both streams still playing?

The Japanese version is being released in November. Whether it'll have 1.1 capable firmware at launch is anyone's guess.

Kris, what I was getting at was---- that on some other forum wasn’t there a claim that the high-def disc of Blood Diamond looked soft and some people attributed this appearance to the encoding involved…… whereas some others, inferred it was due to a process further upstream like the video master or the original source ?

I never really followed that discussion and I was just wondering if the person you mentioned that did the Q.A. on the Return to House on Haunted Hill HD DVD disc was the same person that people were using as an informational source on some forums to justify the softness of Blood Diamond being due to the original film elements ?

paidgeek, a request for future SPHE titles or any titles that y'all encode. Currently the use of the 7669 brings up the calibration screens but it doesn't have any onscreen instructions ala THX Optimode or other calibration discs on DVD. Can SPHE create those kinda instructions on screen to make it easy for new users to calibrate their HDTVs? I think if we can have this utility, it will greatly enhance users appreciation of your efforts.

Also, SPHE and others in the BDA might want to educate users about native 16x9 movies and 2.40:1 movies with an educational short using catalog titles already released on BD.

I think the confirmation part is that it is specifically an upgrade to Final Standard Profile. The way it is worded in the press release it could be anything, though obviously BD Live (or at least FSP) would make the most sense all things considered.
