Default What do you do when a new film isn't released on BD?

Most new films nowadays get a simultaneous DVD & Blu-ray release...but not all. One recent example is Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" which only got a DVD release in the UK, and there are other examples too. When a film is only released on DVD, what do you do? Please vote.

When a film is released on DVD and not on Blu Ray, I make a wish and hope that the Blu Ray fairies come and leave it under my pillow when I'm a sleep.

Depends on the film of course, but if there's no blu-ray release I'm happy to import. I only have 10 imports so far, 6 of those don't have UK releases and the other 4 were superior sets. As long as they are region B compatible it doesn't really bother me.

I've been trying to track down a good multi-region player for a while now but have a feeling it would be easier just to get a decent region A machine.

I just don't buy the DVD. I'm not a fan of importing, as I like everything to be from the UK to support the industry and also it just feels 'wrong' to have a foreign release in my collection.

I always hold out and hope a Blu-ray will come around at some point. Luckily, the films which don't receive Blu-rays are ones I'm not fussed about.

I have no trouble at all with importing! I live in The Netherlands, if I bought all what I have [my BD collection] in The Netherlands, I would have paid at least double as much as I have done now! Plus a lot of releases in the UK, US and elsewhere, do not get a release in The Netherlands, and this answers the question!

To me its their problem if they haven't released a film in my territory (I'm looking at you Die Hard With A Vengeance). I considered the UK release of 'The King's Speech' to be so shoddy it may as well be a DVD thus forcing me to get the Danish import version.

I import it.

I'm all for supporting local releases, but not when they're shoddy or non-existent.

People complaining about region locking yet spending hundreds of pounds each month on expensive steelbooks and slipcases, etc,
as opposed to buying a cheap region free player, have no sympathy from me whatsoever.

For all the hoo-ha over Die Hard With A Vengeance now getting a UK BD release, there was a Region A disc on ebay for £6.99 the other day.

What makes me laugh (apart from the fact that steelbooks are just a gimmick) is that once the next big thing hits and blu-ray is a thing of the past is that steelbooks won't be worth shit.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... "More money than brains".

If it's a film I expect to get a blu-ray release later on I'll wait ( as I'm doing for Midnight in Paris ). If it's something more obscure and available region free I'll import it.

It completely depends on the film.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on Amelie and A Very Long Engagement so imported (from Australia and France respectively)

Amelie's been released here now but AVLE is still to be released here.

I've never bought Steelbooks to make an investment with them in the future.

As for the question, im not sure because I don't think any new film I've personally wanted has not got a Blu-ray release in the UK.

It does still annoy me whenever they don't release new films on BD though, because I just don't see why not.

I agree, it's completely pointless buying steelbooks with a view to making a future profit. I buy them for movies I love because I'm a collector.

As for the question. I would happily import if there were a title that I wanted which didn't have a UK release. I try and support the UK market though and only a small number in my collection are imported.

Exactly. Anyone who's ever collected anything for any reason other than in the hope of making a profit has more money than brains

What makes me laugh is that you do exactly what steelbook collectors do but without the 'gimmick'. Difference is I could probably sell my steelbook collection for more than I paid for it whereas your collection is probably worth half or a third of what you paid.

I'd guess that Alex_DeLarge is aiming his criticism more at people that will pay £30+ for an OOP steelbook when a standard release is maybe £8. All the steelbooks I have were only ever around or a couple of quid more than the standard amaray release.
I don't I've ever paid more than £20 for 1 film or TV season on Blu, I got the Lord of the Rings Extended set for £45 (£15 per film) and I think I paid £67 for the complete LOST set (just over £11 each). I think I'm just too cheap to ever spend big on special editions, including steelbooks.

Disney annoy me here. I'm collecting all of the animated movies (yes and the sequels) want to get all the numbered ones and a few others.

Anyway one of the 'Beauty and the Beast' sequels didn't and won't get a BR release over here. 'Winnie the Pooh' isn't getting a BR release over here (think they said something about it maybe not going to do to well over from what they saw of other Disney titles sales figures)

Long story short if I want all the movies and there sequels that are ever going to get a BR release some have got to be imported (dam you Disney UK)

So when a movie is not available in my country I usually wait, in this case I have no choice but to import there is no chance of us getting said titles on BR plus Disney have the vault so if I don't get them now it could be 5-7 years before I get the chance to own them....

Same here, it depends on how much I want the film. I have imported before, its either that or buying the DVD or just waiting.

Sort of, kind of, but I don't mean to criticise anyone for what they buy. It's their money and they can spend it exactly how they like IMO. It's just my personal opinion that steelbooks are nothing more than an expensive gimmick just to bleed that extra little bit of cash out of those that are willing to buy them.
It's also just an opinion that when blu-ray dies and the next big thing hits that the all singing, all dancing editions will not hold any value unless it was initially released in small numbers. That's just the way it is and is the way it's always been.
