Default That sinking feeling at BB

I just got back from Best Buy (Torrance, CA, Hawthorne @ Pacific Coast Highway).

I was surprised to see that shelf space for Blu-Ray had doubled from 2 racks to 4, while it looked like HD DVD had two . . .

But then I turned around and saw an additional 4 racks for HD DVD -- for a total of 6. That's 6 racks of HD DVD to 4 for Blu-Ray. What is going on?

Having invested in a player and about 65 BDs, my stomach sank and I put back what I had in hand. I'm reaching the point where I feel like bowing out of the HD mess until one format prevails and the other is gone (hopefully BD will prevail with the money I have tied up in it--and not one cent in HD DVD).

I may change my mind later--but right now, I'm losing enthusiasm for the entire HD format and the failure of the studios to respond to sales and settle this now for our sakes!

For my part, I'd never let some store manager's opinion on how many racks of discs he thinks he should have influence my movie watching habits in that way. If I like the movie and the price is right I buy it. Easy peasy.

The only positive part is they have the face of all the titles showing, so you don't have to sort through the spines. But the ratio was a shocker.

Keep an eye open. My store changed since Tuesday of this week!

The Manhattan Beach store as of last Sunday was 3 BD to 2 HD DVD; but it's a smaller store with few customers so far.

They might have a better selection, but do they really sell more? I agree its negative in a marketing viewpoint because it might appear to customers without good knowledge about the HD market to believe HD-DVD is superior in software content.

Anyway...

1. Be sure to complain about the lack of Blu-ray selection :-)

2. Buy the Blu-ray movies you want and enjoy them. No need to panic. Blu-ray will be here for a long time.

50/50 at my local BB... but HD DVD is dusty. LOL!
Blu-ray section is seriously rifled through.

The reality is this is going to be a stale mate for some time. HD DVD is not going away, neither is Blu Ray. The studios and vendors have made this mess, and nothing is going to happen in the near future to clean it all up.

So buy and enjoy... there's no sence worrying about the other guys.

First off, you cannot make an informed decision of this nature based on the anecdotal report of one store, or more importantly, the decision making of a single dept Mgr. There are THOUSANDS of stores among BestBuy, CiruitCity and WalMart.

You need to consider the entire body of evidence to arrive at an intelligent conclusion. Consider yourself on a jury and the evidence is before you: the number of CE companies, the Studios, the Titles, a 50 week winning streak.

The FUD spread by the enemy is working on your psychology. You need to step away from that and look at the evidence.

The evidence is clear.

If Sony is going to start pushing the PS3 as a Blu-ray player I think we will see a big breakthrough for Blu-ray in sales of movies. Hopefully they will also introduce a $400 version which will increase the player sales a lot.

The HD-DVD side does not come anywhere near the potential market for movie-sales that BD has when you include the PS3 as a Blu-ray player. Sony just has to put some effort into showing that people are getting real value when buying a PS3.

HD-DVD has done pretty much everything in order to up sales for their players, but it doesnt seem to have much affect.

Q4 2007 might really be the decisive period in time where this format war will be decided. If BD jumps to 70-80% software sales compared to HD-DVD I think things are pretty much done.

But again, Sony and the other BD members really need to push their product to make it happen.

It is a scary situation. I've thought about waiting it out as well, but decided to continue purchasing. Even if hd-dvd somehow manages to win the war *chuckle* you'll still own the blu. If forced to have my movies on hd-dvd in the future I'd be extremely happy that i purchased so many BDs, and would probably buy as many as possible if the blu was to die out. Simply because I'd own the superior transfer. and thats what it all comes down to, how you want to watch your movies.

oh and oops, howdy everyone. My first post! I've been lurking in the background since i got a ps3 in july. <3

This is not a Best Buy corporate policy type of thing. I live near a ton of Best Buys. The closest one has way more Blu-Rays than HD-DVD, but the one a few miles down the street has like an aisle and a half devoted to HD-DVD, and only one small rack for Blu-Ray.

This same store, by the way, carries about 20 PS3 games, only 1 or 2 copies each...they only have one small display for Wii, but they have 2 entire aisles devoted to Xbox 360.

It's basically a completely worthless Best Buy unless you happen to love the store manager's personal prejudice.

This is because of all the people unwilling to spend the extra $1.50 to buy blu from BB. Come on people $24.99 is not bad for a blu.
