Default Blu regains lead in number of titles

From Digital Bits:

In other news, according to new data from Ralph Tribby's DVD Release Report (tracked here above), Blu-ray Disc has regained the lead in total high-def titles available over HD-DVD, which had been lost when Paramount and DreamWorks pulled their 29 titles as the result of their deal with Toshiba to go HD-DVD only. During the week ending 10/31, Blu-ray had 332 available titles, compared to 328 for HD-DVD. Blu-ray also has more announced titles on the way in the coming months, with 66 compared to 42. The numbers in the Home Media Magazine article certainly don't add up.

I make 389 total, including the 30 (not 29 - maybe they don't count the MI box) from Paramount and 3 from Dreamworks.

None the less I do agree than BD is back in front even if you consider discontinued titles.

It's funny having The Untouchables and The Warriors on your shelf. How dare they exist there? Seriously.

The eProductwars site lists the ratio as 474/402 right now, including preorders. I know that includes a few placeholders, though. How about the "can ship now" ratio? 424/368? Shouldn't that be the actual gauge?

how dare you bring up algebra. algebra killed my puppy.

and it does feel odd having the warriors, untouchables, sky captain, shooter, disturbia, and the MI set seeing that they don't count as blu ray releases.

That's good, because I didn't say it. I am merely quoting Bill Hunt's comments. Feel free to email him with your concerns.

Blu-ray Regains Lead in High-Def Titles
Author: CHRIS TRIBBEY
ctribbey@questex.com
Posted: November 9, 2007

When Paramount Home Entertainment and DreamWorks Animation SKG Blu-ray Disc titles were taken out of the picture in August, Blu-ray lost 29 titles in its repertoire. That doesn’t include three titles that had been announced, but not released.

HD DVD’s stint as leader in terms of high-def releases proved short-lived, however, as in the first week of November Blu-ray regained its lead in terms of total titles available to consumers.

According to figures from The DVD Release Report, total Blu-ray titles available at retail passed HD DVD for the first time since the Paramount/DreamWorks decision, 332 to 328, the week ended Oct. 31. Companies that support Blu-ray also have 66 titles in the pipeline, compared to 42 for HD DVD backers. Those numbers include four HD DVD and 11 Blu-ray titles released Nov. 6.

Compared to the 236 DVD titles added to the market the week ended Oct. 31, the 16 high-def titles released during the same period (12 Blu-ray, four HD DVD) still represent a snail’s pace of high-definition software releases.

Since the Paramount/DreamWorks HD DVD exclusive decision, Paramount Home Entertainment has released six HD DVD titles through Nov. 6. A Paramount representative did not immediately return a request for comment, however a Paramount representative said at a DVD Forum event in early October that more than 30 HD DVD titles were already being planned for 2008. For the rest of the year, Paramount and DreamWorks have another six HD DVD releases planned. The two companies have one more (Zodiac, Jan. 8) announced thus far for early 2008.

Representatives from both sides have stressed how important this fourth quarter is for high-def media. However, Jim Bottoms of the home entertainment research firm Understanding & Solutions said recently that the fourth quarter is no longer the determining period for either format. The Paramount/DreamWorks decision made sure of that, he said.

“There is growing concern throughout the industry that both high-definition disc formats could be lost completely in a world of competing delivery options and viewing platforms,” Bottoms said. “As we stand today, industry support for [Blu-ray] across content and hardware remains the strongest grouping, and it is therefore the format with the greatest chance of market success, although its strength is being eroded.

“Whatever happens, continued competition between the two groups will lead to continuing confusion and uncertainty, and therefore delayed consumer purchase decisions.”

Barring any surprise announcements, Blu-ray will have extended its lead in terms of total title count by the end of the year. Not including titles set for release after Dec. 31, the total title count will likely be 406 Blu-ray Discs versus 372 HD DVDs.

I'ts good to see that even without Paramount the studios see blu-ray as the best avenue to release they're titles

Let's hope Universal and Weinstein see the big picture in 2008 and join our ranks

Wonderful, succinct, lucid article. I hope that Warners does switch to exclusive Blu, and both Universal and Paramount see the futility of supporting a separate format and this senseless war ends with the superior technology winning and all of us join hands, to move forward possitively. If not, you could have Hi Def becoming another laserdisc. A niche that not enough consumers support.

Not in anyone's best interest. Because, well, we all know that SDs are 'good enough'.

Unlike LaserDisc,... HDM is spreading like plague to retailers all over the world. Unlike LaserDisc, HDm is not only for the ones with the money.

Still a small amount of titles overall when you think about it and not an overwhelming lead in titles available over HD-DVD. I would like to see Blu pumping out the titles on a consistent basis.

Remember also that those Paramount Blu-ray titles, though officially discontinued, are still availabe to buy at many retailers and e-tailers as existing inventory. And in some cases (such as Amazon) their inventory has been resupplied.

Well, not entirely accurate regarding LaserDisc. I wasn't rich but I'd had LaserDiscs for two decades--my comic store guy certainly isn't rich and he had LaserDiscs for a long, long time, too.

Tower Records had a very large inventory in the mid-90's, and you could join and get LaserDiscs from the Columbia House LaserDisc club. Denver had a very large retail outlet called Laserland that did a brisk business for years. Prices did come down so that most releases by the mid-90's were $34.99 and $29.99, and a number of titles were $24.99 and $19.99.

It's just that it was niche market that never caught on for reasons that it was the size of a record album and you were limited to 60 minutes of recording, per side. You had to flip over the disk and even put in another disk for longer films. They were only players, not recorders. And once people got used to CDs, and DVD players could also play CDs (ie, downwardly compatible), and DVDs were a more manageable size and the prices came down much more quickly when they were introduced, LaserDisc died--though even I was surprised to learn that the last titles were released in 2000.

-Greg

P.S. I still have titles on LaserDisc that are not available on SD.

As hinted in the article, when people will look back to 2007, and regardless of what happens in the future, everyone will know that Paramount has made the war last longer and made both the consumers and the industry lose money in large quantities, to take a $150M bribe.

If there is such a thing as Karma, it'll have to come back at em.

IMO if Warner goes Blu exclusive Universal will quickly follow. That will leave Paramount looking anti-consumer due to their 18 month contract while Universal can save face so to speak. I just hope Universal improves the quality of their catalog titles as I'm not looking forward to crappy quality Universal Blu-rays.

The article was very good. It's exactly right that buying off Payolamount saved HD DVD from being killed off this Christmas and maybe another 6 months after that. It goes to show that Toshiba knew that without Payolamount they were going to lose the war almost immediately.

That article states 406 blu-rays and 372 hd dvd's by the end of the year.
Why the hell does Amazon say 423 blu-ray to 368 hd dvd that can ship today, and 473 blu-ray to 402 hd dvd that can be purchased today?
