Default Thomson’s New Film Grain Technology™ Specification Adopted...

http://www.companynewsgroup.com/comm...p?co_id=110490

I sincerely hope this technology is ignored by all studios dedicated to a quality product. It's a direct threat to any HD endeavor and both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

It's as bad as overenhanced edges if not worse.

How typical of claiming that this is to improve image quality when in reality it's all about lowering bitrates to levels that can't handle grain (so they can squeeze more extras on the same one disc) and avoid the compression uglyness by removing the grain (and image detail), adding grain removal artifacts, compress, decompress and add fake grain on top.

High bit rate compression with original grain, no low bit rate fake simulation with artifacts!!

People spend thousands of dollars on noise reduction devices, video processors ,and the rest of it, and here they're going to introduce something that ADDS artificial noise!

I want CRYSTAL CLEAR picture quality first and foremost! I think this is terrible and should be fought and opposed as much as possible.

I won't buy a product that has artificial noise added to it.

This is just more of the same HD-lite type mentality and execution thereof. I think it's garbage.

From the article:
Quote:
all HD DVD players will be manufactured with Film Grain Technology, notably RCA's HDV5000, Toshiba's HD-A1 and HD-XA1, and Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD Player.
So this Film Grain Technology is already being used then. I guess I'd like to see a side by side comparison of an HD transfer with FGT and one without before I make up my mind on whether or not it's worthwhile or a mistake.

Check the two threads on AVS about this. One's in the HD-DVD player area, the other is in the HD Software Discussion area.

I'm reading about this all over the place and there's only thing that's certain: NO ONE has a 100 percent grip on what this thing is, what it does, or what the ramifications are.

So until that gets cleared out, I'm stating on the record again:

I want CRYSTAL CLEAR picture quality, no matter what. No noise. No artifacts. Certainly nothing artificial.

Here's another good read on the subject.
