What (percussion) instrument is this?

I have heard this instrument in a number of different songs before... if I think of another example, I will post it...

That was a very enjoyable listen, Sylentwolf, but I don't hear the same repetitive, "percussive" sound in the song.

The sound to which I am referring starts at about 0:16 in Bowie's song and occurs throughout the first several minutes of Marvin's song.

What I hear is a guiro, many types. You rub the wooden stick across it for that sound.

I'm gonna have to ask my friend who lives in Brazil about this thing... or if she knows how to pronounce that word properly.


And I gotta say, are you sure that thing you posted couldn't be used for, uh, other purposes?

Pleasure Wilky, that's what I heard anyways. Probably pronounced differently that we think.

As for other uses, heu, really?

Edit: By the way, not as easy as it might look to play, to continually hit it right without screwing up ain't for me.

I knew the sound but couldn't recall the name. Best I could find was rhythm sticks, where one or both have ridges like the ones in this amazon link.
